Assistent Sandro Wagner (37/Vertrag bis 2026) hat aber Cheftrainer-Ambitionen, steht bei Bundesliga-Klubs bereits hoch im Kurs. Das spüren auch die Spieler. Darum kämpfen sie jetzt um einen Verbleib von Wagner!
Nach SPORT BILD-Informationen soll sich Kapitän Joshua Kimmich (30) intern dafür starkmachen, dass Wagner jetzt noch nicht geht. Im Auftrag der Mannschaft. „Ich würde mir absolut wünschen, dass er mindestens bei der WM noch dabei ist“, sagt Pascal Groß (33) gegenüber SPORT BILD. „Sandro ist super, leistet hier super Arbeit, muss man sagen. Er bringt eine brutale Energie mit, pusht uns immer, pusht die Jungs, ist immer da. Sandro macht einen überragenden Job hier.“
Auch Oliver Baumann (34) spricht sich klar für Wagner aus: „Es wäre schön, wenn Sandro bei der WM noch dabei wäre. Es passt alles sehr, sehr gut zusammen. Das ist ja beim Trainerteam ähnlich wie bei der Mannschaft. Je länger du zusammen bist, desto mehr fügt sich das, umso mehr bist du aufeinander abgestimmt.“
[–>David Raum (26) zeigt sich beeindruckt von Wagners Taktik-Wissen, das sich dieser aus internationalen Spielbeobachtungen zieht. „Sandro Wagner ist insgesamt ein Wahnsinnsmensch mit viel Ahnung von Fußball, der selbst noch vor ein paar Jahren gekickt hat“, sagt Raum. „Er kann sich deshalb sehr gut in uns als Spieler hineinversetzen, ist immer in engem Austausch mit jedem und gibt uns Feedback zusätzlich zum Nationaltrainer. Dazu pusht er uns in jeder Situation und ist eigentlich wie ein weiterer, wichtiger Mitspieler der Nationalmannschaft.“
Wagner ist seit 2023 Assistent an der Seite von Nagelsmann, bringt seine Erfahrungen als Ex-Spieler (u. a. Bayern, Hertha, Hoffenheim) wie auch als Trainer (Aufstieg mit Unterhaching in die 3. Liga) mit ein. Die DFB-Führung, allen voran Sportdirektor Völler, weiß, wie wichtig das Wagner-Element für das Gesamtkonstrukt in der Führungs-Crew der Nationalmannschaft ist. Ob er tatsächlich bleibt, wenn Klubs wie RB Leipzig oder Borussia Dortmund anklopfen, wagt aber niemand einzuschätzen.

Darauf von SPORT BILD angesprochen, sagt Nagelsmann: „Sandro hat sich vor nicht allzu langer Zeit zu seiner Zukunft geäußert, dass er bis 2026 an Bord bleiben möchte und dann auch guckt, was seine eigene Zukunft Richtung Cheftrainer macht. Ich habe seit seinen Aussagen nichts Gegenteiliges gehört, und ich muss auch nicht in seinem Wort sprechen.“
Für das anstehende Final-Four-Turnier kann der DFB mit Wagner planen. Im Juni wird die Mannschaft für die Nations League wieder zusammenkommen, im ersten Halbfinale geht es am 4. Juni in München gegen Portugal, das Finale steigt vier Tage später.
