Carlos Lehder, excapo del cartel de Medellín, recuperó su libertad tras un fallo judicial que declaró la prescripción de los procesos penales en su contra en Colombia. Lehder, de 75 años, llegó al Aeropuerto Internacional El Dorado de Bogotá el 28 de marzo de 2025 en un vuelo comercial desde Alemania, donde había residido tras cumplir una condena de 33 años en Estados Unidos por narcotráfico.
Al llegar a Colombia, Lehder fue detenido por funcionarios de Migración Colombia debido a una orden de captura vigente relacionada con delitos de fabricación, tráfico y porte de armas y municiones de uso exclusivo de las Fuerzas Armadas. Inicialmente, fue puesto a disposición de la Policía Nacional y se legalizó su captura provisional el 29 de marzo.
Este 31 de marzo, el Juzgado 18 de Ejecución de Penas de Bogotá determinó que las penas en su contra habían prescrito, ya que habían transcurrido más de 25 años desde la emisión de la sentencia en 1999.
El tribunal canceló las órdenes de captura y ordenó su liberación inmediata. Su abogada, Sondra McCollins, argumentó que la orden de captura no debería estar vigente, ya que la Fiscalía colombiana había certificado en 2020 que no tenía procesos pendientes.
El regreso de Lehder a Colombia generó controversia y expectativas, especialmente entre las víctimas del cartel de Medellín, quienes exigieron que revelara más información sobre su pasado criminal. Sin embargo, su abogada rechazó esta posibilidad, afirmando que Lehder ya había contado todo en su libro y que no estaba obligado a proporcionar más detalles.

Carlos Lehder fue una figura clave en el cartel de Medellín, fundado junto a Pablo Escobar. Desde muy joven comenzó a involucrarse en actividades delictivas, liderando una red de tráfico de vehículos robados que lo llevó a prisión en Connecticut. Tras su liberación en 1975, Lehder se asoció con Pablo Escobar, aportando conocimientos cruciales para el incipiente Cártel de Medellín.
En 1978, adquirió una isla en las Bahamas, Cayo Norman, que utilizó como punto de tránsito para el transporte de marihuana y cocaína hacia Estados Unidos. Lehder es descrito como un individuo con un coeficiente intelectual superior al promedio, políglota y con una justificación política para sus actividades ilegales, criticando el imperialismo estadounidense.
En 1987, Lehder fue capturado y se convirtió en el primer narcotraficante colombiano extraditado a Estados Unidos, donde fue sentenciado a cadena perpetua más 135 años adicionales. Tras colaborar en el juicio contra el dictador panameño Manuel Noriega, su pena fue reducida, y en 2020 fue liberado después de cumplir 33 años de prisión. Desde entonces, reside en Frankfurt, Alemania, donde ha escrito un libro sobre su vida y el Cártel de Medellín.
Lehder es recordado no solo por su papel en el narcotráfico, sino también por su estilo de vida extravagante, su nacionalismo y su crítica a las políticas estadounidenses sobre drogas. Su historia es un reflejo de la complejidad y el impacto del narcotráfico en Colombia y el mundo.
