Kanye West weighs in on the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar by calling the Canadian rapper a “million times better” and “million times more important” as one of the industry’s most controversial personalities gets involved.
Drake and Lamar have been at war since the start of 2024 when Kendrick responded to J Cole suggesting the trio are the “big three” of hip-hop, only for the Californian to firmly reject that claim and suggest he’s alone at the top.
The God’s Plan singer didn’t take kindly to that and so their battle began, to which Kendrick devastatingly ended by releasing Euphoria, Meet the Grahams and Not Like Us, calling Drake a predator and pedophile in the latter; something he denies.
Drake, who is really called Aubrey Graham, is now in a lawsuit against Universal Music Group for defamation whilst Lamar went on to perform Not Like Us at the Super Bowl before millions of viewers.
Lamar is widely agreed to have won the battle and asserted himself over his peer, but West warns this might not actually be the case.
“One thing is, Drake is a million times better than Kendrick,” West said, as per Kurrco. “And a million times more important.
“What Future has done, thug Drake culturally. That s**t last year, I could barely sit through that s**t.
“That s**t was insane, bro. Had Lucian Grainge, Universal, Drake lawsuit s**t written all over it.
“At the end of the day, all this s**t I’m saying – Jim Jones, Kendrick, all these celebrities – the funny thing is we’re all in the same boat.”
UMG files motion to dismiss
UMG denies the allegations of defamation and harassment on their part, whilst Lamar is not named in the action, and announced their plans to file a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on March 17.
Drake claims UMG knew the allegations from Kendrick were false but published them anyway in pursuit of financial gain, but the music group insists the action is an upset person who lost a rap battle.
“One of the most successful recording artists of all time, lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated,” UMG told the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. “Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds.”
UMG added: “Drake has been pleased to use UMG’s platform to promote tracks leveling similarly incendiary attacks at Lamar, including, most significantly, that Lamar engaged in domestic abuse [in his song ‘Family Matters’].”
“But now, after losing the rap battle, Drake claims that ‘Not Like Us’ is defamatory. It is not.”
