McDavid neodcestoval s mužstvem ke čtyřem venkovním zápasům, podle Knoblaucha se však jeho návrat blíží. „Možná by se k nám mohl připojit později během toho tripu, ale v tuto chvíli ještě ne. Vím, kdy by to mělo být, ale nebude to další jeden nebo dva zápasy,“ řekl Knoblauch.
Po návratu budou mít Oilers před sebou ještě pět dalších utkání, z nichž tři odehrají na domácím ledě. Poslední duel v dlouhodobé fázi je čeká 17. dubna. „Na jeho návrat by mělo dojít před koncem základní části. Vyhlížíme ho v horizontu týdne, dvou, maximálně tří. Určitě bude zpátky, než základní část skončí,“ uvedl Knoblauch.
Osmadvacetiletý McDavid, který je na šestém místě ligové produktivity, odehrál v dosavadním průběhu sezony 63 zápasů a připsal si 90 bodů za 26 gólů a 64 asistencí. Dvakrát vynechal po třech zápasech, poprvé kvůli zranění kotníku z konce října, podruhé během ledna kvůli disciplinárnímu trestu. Při jeho současné absenci tým dvakrát vyhrál a dvakrát neuspěl.
Během uplynulého víkendu se vrátil do sestavy Oilers druhý z hlavních tahounů Leon Draisaitl, jenž se zranil dva dny před McDavidem, přesto dál suverénně vede pořadí nejlepších střelců soutěže s 51 góly. Na marodce pořád jsou brankář Stuart Skinner, obránci Mattias Ekholm s Johnem Klingbergem a útočníci Evander Kane s Trentem Fredericem.
„Myslím, že takovým obdobím plným zranění si projde každý tým. Někoho to postihne více, někoho méně. Minulou sezonu jsme měli štěstí a zraněných hráčů jsme měli minimum, zatímco teď byly mimo hru dvě naše superhvězdy a také asi náš nejlepší bek. Nejhorším scénářem by bylo, pokud by scházeli i na play off, ale to už bychom je měli mít všechny zpátky. Snad s výjimkou Evandera všichni naskočí ještě před koncem základní části,“ řekl Knoblauch.
