Una monumental pelea durante el segundo cuarto del partido entre los Timbelwolves y los Pistons se saldó con la expulsión de cinco jugadores y dos miembros de los cuerpos técnicos. Por los de Minnesota, tuvieron que dejar el encuentro Naz Reid, Donte DiVincenzo y el asistente Pablo Prigioni, seleccionador argentino y exjugador de Baskonia y Real Madrid, entre otros. Por los de Detroit, enfilaron el vestuario antes de tiempo Isaiah Stewart, Ron Holland II, Marcus Sasser y el entrenador JB Bickerstaff.

La tumultuosa refriega se produjo cuando restaban 8:36 para el descanso y con los Pistons ganando por 30-39. A Holland se le señaló una falta por por quitarle el balón de las manos a Reid en una entrada a canasta. Hubo un pique entre ambos y DiVincenzo se puso entre medias, agarró la camiseta de su rival y allí acudieron multitud de jugadores y técnicos que se enzarzaron a pocos metros de la primera fila de asientos. Algún jugador llegó a caer sobre ella. Bickerstaff y Prigioni, en lugar de tratar de apaciguar los ánimos, se gritaban mutuamente. Tuvieron que ser separados.

El partido ya venía caliente y esa fue la jugada que hizo que se inflamara. Se señalaron 12 faltas técnicas, la mayor cantidad en encuentro de la NBA desde el 23 de marzo de 2005, según datos de OptaSTATS. “Obviamente, las cosas se pasaron de la raya, pero se ve que los chicos se cuidan entre sí, se protegen mutuamente, se apoyan… Esos son valores innegociables en nuestro vestuario”, dijo Bickerstaff.
Un partido demasiado físico
“Pensé que el partido ya había sido demasiado físico antes. Sabíamos que eran un equipo muy físico. Te golpean, te sujetan… Lo que esperas de un equipo así. Pero llegó un punto en el que los jugadores iban a tomar las riendas y eso nunca es deseable”, analizó Chris Finch, entrenador de los Timberwolves.

El partido se lo llevaron los Wolves por 123-104 y después de remontar 16 puntos. A los Pistons les pesaron más las expulsiones y también la baja de su referente Cade Cunningham, ausente por una lesión en la pantorrilla. Rudy Gobert hizo un partido monstruoso con 19 puntos y 25 rebotes, 10 de ellos ofensivos. La anotación la llevaron entre Julius Randle (26) y Anthony Edwards. El mejor por los Pistons fue Malik Beasley con 27 puntos.
