Angel Reese is no stranger to stepping up to a challenge and owning the moment. But this time, even she seemed a little unsure about what she had signed up for. Still, standing tall and staying composed-ish, she found herself at the center of an unforgettable basketball moment.
You could say she witnessed one of the most insane dunks ever, but fans aren’t entirely convinced she saw the whole thing in real-time. And honestly, who could blame her? Given the circumstances, it’s more than likely she shut her eyes-just a little-as the stunt unfolded right above her.
A moment that had everyone holding their breath
If standing flat-footed at 6’3″ is already intimidating, imagine watching someone clear that height mid-air. That’s exactly what AJ Dybantsa pulled off, going viral with one of the most ridiculous dunks of the year. The 6’9″ 18-year-old, who spent last season at Utah Prep, didn’t win the contest, but he definitely had the most jaw-dropping moment-soaring over Reese before throwing it down with authority.
Reese’s facial expression became the talk of the internet, as she had no choice but to be the obstacle AJ had to clear. With a crowd watching and cameras rolling, backing out wasn’t really an option. But the instant AJ took flight, Reese’s reaction said it all-maybe she wasn’t as confident about him making it over her as she had originally let on.
Flying high like an Angel
Thankfully, he did clear her, but the internet quickly pointed out that avoiding contact was part of the challenge. Given that Angel is a WNBA-level player with serious height, AJ needed every bit of his vertical-and maybe even a little extra luck-to make sure he didn’t land on top of her. Or perhaps, he just needed a touch of Angel’s good fortune to pull off the highlight of the night.
In the end, Angel had the perfect reaction, sealing the moment with a classic high-five. Because let’s be real-for a split second, she definitely feared for her life. And thanks to the magic of sports photography, that moment will live on forever in legendary snapshots destined to go down in dunk contest history.
