Falcons preparing for Kirk Cousins to be backup QB, not expected at OTAs

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Atlanta Falcons don’t expect Kirk Cousins to attend the team’s offseason team activities, and head coach Raheem Morris said Tuesday at the NFL owners’ meetings that he won’t hold it against the veteran quarterback.

“I don’t think he’ll be there,” Morris said. “If he is, he’ll be welcome with open arms.”

Morris pointed out that the team’s OTAs are voluntary and “will be treated as such.” The Falcons, however, still anticipate that Cousins could be their backup quarterback when the season begins, and they will expect him to be in attendance when mandatory practices begin.

“Everything is the same as far as how we feel about Kirk,” Morris said. “We still feel very strongly about Kirk being our backup quarterback. We feel very strongly about the human being that he is. Obviously, it’s a business.”

The business part of the situation that could change Cousins’ status is a trade. Cousins has told Morris he would prefer to be in a situation where he can be the starting quarterback, Morris said, and the Falcons will listen to trade offers for the 13-year veteran, a team source said. However, Morris has not discussed Cousins waiving his no-trade clause with the quarterback.

If Cousins does return as the backup to Michael Penix Jr., Morris does not expect Cousins to cause problems for Penix in the locker room, the coach said.

“I just know how good a person Kirk is,” Morris said. “Kirk has too much respect for the game and Michael and that room and his coaches (to cause an issue). He’s not that type of guy. This is a situation we can resolve if we have to.”

The Falcons signed Cousins to a four-year deal with $90 million guaranteed last offseason and committed another $10 million to his guaranteed money by keeping him on the roster past a March 17 deadline.
