La NFL, la Liga profesional de fútbol americano, anunció, durante la reunión anual de propietarios de los 32 equipos, cambios en las reglas de la prórroga (tiempo extra), patadas de salida y repetición instantánea.
Con las nuevas modificaciones, a partir de la temporada 2025, en la prórroga los dos equipos tendrán la oportunidad de tener una posesión, tal y como sucede en los playoffs. Hasta el año pasado, en la temporada regular la regla permitía que el equipo que poseía primero el balón ganara el partido si anotaba un ‘touchdown’, sin oportunidad de respuesta para el oponente.
La NFL mantendrá en 10 minutos la duración máxima del tiempo extra en temporada regular para preservar las condiciones físicas de los jugadores. Si los equipos no rompen la igualdad al final de est tiempo, el partido terminará en empate.
En lo que respecta a la patada de salida, la NFL informó que a partir de esta campaña el balón de un despeje que termine en la zona de anotación será colocado en la yarda 35 para que el equipo que recibe inicie su ofensiva. Hasta la campaña pasada estos llamados ‘touchbacks’ hacían que el balón fuera colocado para el inicio del ataque en la yarda 30. El cambio en la regla busca incentivar los regresos en los despejes ya que los equipos buscarán no dar a sus oponentes una buena posición de campo con una patada hasta las diagonales. Con este ajuste los ‘kickers’ (pateadores) que logren enviar el balón con precisión antes de la zona de anotación serán más valiosos.
Este martes los dueños también aprobaron en la reunión celebrada en Palm Beach, Florida (EEUU), la propuesta para ampliar el uso de la repeticiones instantáneas para detectar castigos por golpes a un jugador indefenso, sujeciones a la máscara, tackleadas por el cuello, zancadillas y choques o rudezas contra el pateador.
Estas infracciones podrán ser revisadas y enmendadas gracias a la repetición siempre que exista evidencia clara en el vídeo de que los oficiales en el campo se equivocaron al marcar esas penalizaciones. Sólo en este caso podrá ser pedida la repetición por los entrenadores.
Respecto al calendario, la NFL anunció que el 25 de diciembre se jugarán tres partidos. Netflix transmitirá los dos primeros y Amazon cerrará la cartelera. El año pasado los dos encuentros del día de Navidad fueron vistos por 65 millones de espectadores únicamente en Estados Unidos, siendo los partidos con mayor audiencia de la historia de la liga con una media de más de 24 millones de televidentes en cada uno de los encuentros.
Para cerrar la jornada, Rich McKay, presidente del comité de competición de la NFL, dijo que hubo una larga discusión sobre el ‘tush push’ -jugada en la que el quarterback es empujado por dos corredores para obtener una distancia corta-, pero no se llegó a ningún acuerdo, por lo que la propuesta de los Green Bay Packers para prohibir esta jugada se votará en mayo próximo
