PALM BEACH, FL — While the Steelers continue to wait for a final decision from Aaron Rodgers, team president and owner Art Rooney II indicated Tuesday that an answer could come soon.
Speaking with a small group of Steelers reporters at the NFL’s annual league meetings, Rooney gave his most revealing answer when asked about Rodgers throwing with recently acquired receiver DK Metcalf.

“I would say it was a good sign that (Rodgers) wanted to do that,” Rooney said. “We keep hearing that (Rodgers is) headed in our direction. All signs are positive so far.”
He added later: “We keep getting positive sort of signals about it. I’d say we feel pretty good about it.”
The last time Rooney spoke publicly, he said it was his preference to re-sign either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. However, both Wilson and Fields signed free-agent contracts with other clubs, with Wilson landing a one-year deal with the Giants and Fields signing a two-year deal to be the Jets’ starting quarterback. Since then, the Steelers’ efforts have focused on Rodgers. During the process, the Steelers hosted Rodgers at the team facility on March 21. GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin both said this week that it was a positive meeting.
“It was good to meet him,” Rooney said. “We talked about Pittsburgh and all the Pittsburgh coaches he’s had over the years. We talked about Greenfield and how much he knows about Greenfield. So we had a good conversation.”
The Steelers initially hoped to have a quarterback in place before free agency began. As the target has changed, the process has dragged out longer than anyone anticipated, including Rooney.
“No, (I) didn’t envision it taking this long,” Rooney said. “No.”
During a short interview session, Rooney was asked how much longer he was willing to wait.
“Not forever, but a little while longer,” Rooney said.
On Sunday, Tomlin said there is no deadline for Rodgers to make a decision and that he’s not asked the quarterback for a timeline.
“We’ll see what happens,” Rooney said. “Hopefully, we’ll know something soon.”
