Unos días después del anuncio del cambio de apodo, todavía se hace raro llamar a Ilia Topuria (16-0) ‘La Leyenda’. El hispanogeorgiano no solo ha cambiado de categoría en busca de nuevos retos, sino que también ha realizado un lavado de imagen. ‘El Matador’ ya ha pasado a mejor vida, y no hay ni rastro de él en ninguna de las redes sociales del todavía campeón de peso pluma. Tras el WOW 17 celebrado en el Madrid Arena, Topuria aclaró sus motivos en rueda de prensa.
Primero fue cuestionado por las críticas que ha recibido tras esta decisión, a lo que respondió con un tajante “no me importa”. Más tarde, ahondó un poco más en el tema. “El tema del cambio de apodo fue como un clic dentro de mí. Sentía que necesitaba hacerlo. Es algo mucho más profundo”, sentenció.

Este anuncio se produjo la semana pasada en Toledo, donde Topuria recibió un homenaje y un paseo a su nombre, el ‘Paseo Ilia Topuria’. Allí, fruto de la emoción, soltó el bombazo. Aunque en un principio este cambio de apodo iba a ser una sorpresa hasta que lo anunciase Bruce Buffer -speaker de la UFC- en su próximo combate, Ilia se saltó el protocolo y lo anunció antes de lo previsto.

Los patrocinios, un posible motivo
Como dice Topuria, la mayoría de la gente necesita ver para creer, pero él primero cree y luego hace que pasen las cosas. Elstatus de leyenda es algo que un deportista se suele ganar, no se impone, pero cualquiera rebate a Ilia. Dijo que sería campeón del mundo, y lo fue. Dijo que noquearía a Volkanovski y a Holloway, y lo hizo. Topuria ya es una leyenda, y ahora tendrá un apodo que se lo recuerde cada día.
También existen rumores de que esta decisión podría estar condicionada por un tema de marcas, ya que ‘El Matador’ puede sonar demasiado agresivo para según qué empresas. Ilia afirma que hay algo mucho más profundo detrás de todo esto, mientras que la siguiente vez que suene ‘El Mariachi‘ y el hispanogeorgiano vaya rumbo al octágono, la categoría no será lo único que cambie en él.
