USWNT forward Trinity Rodman says she is unsure if she will ever fully recover from her persistent back injuries.
Rodman started her first game of 2025 during the Washington Spirit’s 2-1 win over Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) on Friday and has been named on the U.S. roster for the first time since the 2024 Paris Olympics for April’s international break.

The 22-year-old has dealt with multiple back injuries since her debut season in the NWSL in 2021, and in September was taken off in a wheelchair during a league match against the Kansas City Current due to an “intense back spasm”.
“I don’t know if my back will ever be 100 per cent,” Rodman told reporters after Friday’s NWSL win, as quoted by ESPN.
She explained there was not a specific issue with her back but “just the way my back’s structured”, and it was therefore something she had to manage as opposed to mend.
“I’m happy with the progression that we’ve had,” Rodman added. “But for me I don’t think my back will ever be the way it was my rookie year, which is unfortunate.”
Rodman provided eight goals and six assists in 24 appearances in the 2024 NWSL season as the Spirit reached the championship final, but were beaten by the Orlando Pride.
She also scored three times at the Paris Olympics as the U.S. won gold, and said it was a psychological challenge returning from injury this year after hitting such heights in 2024.
“It’s been the mental battle of: I can’t be the Trinity I was at the Olympics now coming back from injury,” Rodman said. “So l’m trying to play the role as best as I can and still be effective in a different way as I build back up into it.”
The U.S. face Olympic silver medalists Brazil on April 5 and 7.
