O Botafogo superou as expectativas na rodada de estreia do Campeonato Brasileiro. Eliminado no Carioca, o Fogão surpreendeu seus torcedores e também Tostão pela boa partida realizada diante do Palmeiras, domingo, no Allianz Parque.
Em sua coluna na Folha de S.Paulo, o tricampeão do mundo fez questão de mencionar a transformação que passou a equipe que perdeu jogadores importantes como Almada e Luís Henrique, além do técnico Artur Jorge.

Atual campeão continental, o Botafogo inicia nesta noite a caminhada pelo bicampeonato da Libertadores. Logo mais, às 21h30 (de Brasília), enfrenta a Universidad de Chile, em Santiago, pela primeira rodada da fase de grupos da competição.
Para esta partida, Paiva não poderá contar ainda com o zagueiro Bastos, lesionado. Além dele, o atacante Savarino também será ausência. No meio-campo, a tendência é que Patrick de Paula mantenha seu lugar entre os titulares, como foi na estreia do Brasileirão. Na defesa, Jair deve ser escalado.
Uma provável escalação do Botafogo tem John; Vitinho, Jair, Barboza e Alex Telles; Gregore, Marlon Freitas e Patrick de Paula; Artur, Santiago Rodríguez (Matheus Martins) e Igor Jesus.
