El Gran Premio de Japón es uno de los más antiguos en el actual calendario de la F1. Con su entrada en 1976, la carrera en tierras niponas ha sido una constante en la mayoría de las temporadas de la categoría reina del deporte motor. Fuji Speedway (1976-1978/2006-2008) y el ‘Circuito Internacional de Suzuka‘ (1987-2006/2009-2019/2022-act), se han repartido las diferentes ediciones del GP a lo largo de los años.
Asimismo, son 19 los pilotos que han logrado sentarse en lo más alto del podio al término de un GP de Japón. Michael Schumacher ha sido el piloto con más éxito con seis victorias en Suzuka, la primera de ellas en 1995, camino de su segundo título mundial con Benetton.
Lewis Hamilton (5), Sebastian Vettel (4), Max Verstappen (3), Gerhard Berger (2), Ayrton Senna (2), Damon Hill (2), Mika Hakkinen (2) y Fernando Alonso (2), son los otros competidores que han repetido la máxima hazaña en el Gran premio en tierras niponas.
Un hito que solo comparten dos pilotos
Este año se cumplirán 17 años desde la última vez que se disputó una carrera en el trazado de Fuji. Solo dos pilotos de la actual parrilla del Mundial tuvieron el privilegio de haber competido en dicho circuito, en el que se convirtieron en los únicos dos pilotos en ganar el GP en escenarios diferentes.

Lewis Hamilton y Fernando Alonso son los únicos pilotos que han ganado el Gran Premio de Japón en dos escenarios diferentes. La primera de las cuatro victorias de Hamilton en Japón se produjo en 2007 en Fuji, con McLaren, mientras que las otras llegaron en Suzuka en 2014, 2015 y 2017, con Mercedes. Alonso ganó en Suzuka en 2006 y en Fuji en 2008, ambos con Renault.
