At the 2025 UCA College Nationals held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, University of South Florida cheerleaders Ashlyn Pinner and Brandon Gray captivated audiences with a breathtaking one-handed stunt routine. Their performance not only showcased their exceptional athleticism but also highlighted the dedication and discipline inherent in collegiate cheerleading.
Pinner, a public health major at USF, and Gray have been integral members of the university’s cheer program. Their recent routine featured Gray lifting Pinner effortlessly with one hand, executing a series of complex maneuvers that left spectators in awe. This display of strength and precision is only possible thanks to countless hours of practice and the remarkable synergy between the duo. You could see their success written all over their faces.
The UCA College Nationals is a prestigious event that draws top collegiate cheer teams from across the nation. USF’s cheer program has a storied history of success at this competition. In 2023, the coed cheer team secured their third consecutive national championship in the Division IA Large Coed category, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in collegiate cheerleading. The all-girl cheer team also clinched the Division IA Game Day title that same year, underscoring the depth of talent within the program.
Cheerleading, often underestimated, demands a high level of physical fitness, coordination, and trust among team members. For athletes like Pinner and Gray, the sport has provided a constructive outlet to channel their energy, develop discipline, and cultivate a sense of purpose.
Participation in collegiate cheerleading also opens pathways to professional opportunities. Many cheerleaders aspire to join professional teams affiliated with major sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA, or MLB. The experience gained through rigorous college programs equips athletes with the skills and exposure necessary to advance in the competitive world of professional cheerleading.
