Aunque parezca lo contrario, no se puede decir que el Madrid lo haya ganado ‘todo’ en el mundo del fútbol. Más allá de la ausencia de la extinta Recopa de Europa en sus vitrinas (dos finales perdidas), hay otro ‘título’ que se resiste a los blancos, aunque en realidad se trata de una suma de trofeos. Son los que componen el triplete, ‘treble’ en su acepción original inglesa, compuesto por los dos torneos nacionales tradicionales (Liga y Copa) más el principal de los trofeos continentales, la Copa de Europa o, ahora, Liga de Campeones. Un hito al que los blancos aspiran de nuevo en la temporada en curso, clasificados para la final de Copa del Rey, segundos en la Liga y en cuartos de final de Champions.

El Madrid ha estado cerca en varias ocasiones, sin ir más lejos la temporada pasada, en la que sólo la derrota ante el Atlético le impidió progresar en la Copa en una temporada en la que se ganaron con solvencia tanto Liga como Copa de Europa. Ese tropiezo fue uno de los tan sólo dos que sumó el equipo de Ancelotti en la 23-24, y acabó siendo decisivo para privar al Madrid de su primer triplete.
También en la 21-22 estuvo muy cerca de lograrlo el equipo de Carletto, que igualmente ganó Liga y Champions (la Decimocuarta, ante el Liverpool en París), pero fue eliminado en cuartos de la Copa por el Athletic.

Estos dos dobletes Liga-Copa de Europa son los últimos de una lista de tan sólo cinco registros. Los dos primeros llegaron en las temporadas 56-57- y 57-58, cuando el equipo comandado por Di Stéfano, con cinco Copas de Europa consecutivas entre 1956 y 1960, ganó además dos Ligas, pero no pudo lograr la Copa en ninguna de esas dos temporadas. En la primera de ellas fue eliminado en cuartos por el Barcelona y, en la segunda, perdió la final ante el Athletic.
Hubo que esperar hasta la campaña 16-17 para que el Madrid volviera a ganar en el mismo año Liga y Copa de Europa, la segunda de las tres Champions consecutivas con Zidane. Pero, en la Copa, su camino acabó en cuartos, esta vez a manos del Celta.
La emisora catalana narró con su habitual estilo el gol de Oyarzabal que forzaba la prórroga y el tanto de Rüdiger que acabó por dar el pase a la final de Copa al Real Madrid.
También son cinco los dobletes Liga-Copa del Madrid a lo largo de su historia: 1961-62, 1974-75, 1979-80 y 1988-89. El primero no se convirtió en triplete porque el Benfica de Eusebio ganó a los blancos la final de la Copa de Europa, disputada en Ámsterdam. Dos décadas después, fue el Hamburgo el que apeó al Madrid de una final que, además, se jugó en el Bernabéu. Y, en tiempos de la Quinta, los blancos fueron aplastados de nuevo en semifinales por el AC Milan de Sacchi y Ancelotti.
El Celtic, pionero
El primer club de la historia que logró el triplete fue el Celtic de Glasgow, que ganó Liga y Copa en Escocia y además la Copa de Europa (primera de un club británico) en 1967. Luego se sumaron dos holandeses (Ajax en 1972 y PSV en 1988), el Manchester United de los ‘Fergie Boys’ en 1999, el Barcelona de Guardiola en 2009, el Inter de Mourinho un año después, el Bayern de Heynckes en 2013, de nuevo el Barça (Luis Enrique) en 2015, el Bayern de Flick en 2020 y el City (también con Pep) en 2023. Una lista de grandes del fútbol europeo en la que el Madrid no ha podido, hasta el momento, inscribir su nombre. Esta temporada tiene una nueva oportunidad para lograrlo.
