The University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball Team is going to play for the NCAA national championship this Sunday against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The game will be a rematch of the 2022 title game, when South Carolina beat UConn 64-49. The Gamecocks enters its third championship match in four years coming off its best all-around performance of the tournament.
Paige Bueckers tries to piss off teammate Azzi Fudd ahead of the NCAA championship game
The team lead by elite head coach Dawn Staley will try to become the first program to repeat as national champion since Geno Auriemma did it… well, that’s an understatement: the legendary coach got his squad to four straight titles, from 2013 to 2016. The latter was the year that the Huskies beat Syracuse 82-51.
Paige Bueckers tries to piss off a teammate
Senior guard Paige Bueckers is the superstar of the UConn Huskies, as the 2025 Big East Player of the Year is trying to win her first national championship before he goes to the WNBA. It’s fair to say that the fastest player in program history to score 2,000 career points – doing it so in 102 games – has a chip on her shoulder.
But Bueckers also know how to have fun with her teammates, and a video posted online proves just that. In the images we can see senior guard Azzi Fudd – who’s also a key piece for the UConn Huskies – posing for a picture when Paige steps on the frame and tries to piss her off by making funny faces.
Fudd is unbothered but as Bueckers turns to the camera, we can see the Virginia native staring at her teammate as she waits for the nonsense to stop. The 2025 Big East All-Tournament Team is taking care of business, as she also wants to know how does it feel to win a title before she declares for the WNBA.
Bueckers is not worried about the Huskies’ drought
After beating the UCLA Bruins 85-51 in the NCAA Tournament women’s semifinals, Paige Bueckers talked to the media about the big game ahead versus the South Carolina Gamecocks, who are going to try to repeat and cement their legacy as one of the best basketball programs in history.
“We aren’t worried about the past. Every single day you walk into the gym and live up to the standard of playing UConn basketball,” Bueckers said. “Not comparing yourself to other teams and players before. We want to fill their shoes and make them proud. Wear the jersey with pride.”
Paige, who would probably be a top pick in the WNBA draft on April 14, acknowledged the offensive power that Azzi Fudd provides to the Huskies. “It’s just so much fun to watch her play with joy and be at this stage. You see all the ups and downs, the bad days, the good days and to be at this spot (…) it means everything to us,” the superstar added.
