The Earthshot Prize is heading to South America for the first time, as Prince William has officially announced that the 2025 edition of his global environmental awards ceremony will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event, which has previously taken place in Cape Town, Singapore, Boston, and London, is scheduled for November – the same month Brazil is also set to host the Cop30 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
While Prince William‘s attendance at the ceremony has yet to be formally confirmed, there is growing speculation that his visit to Rio could overlap with the climate summit, potentially placing him among the world leaders in attendance.
Should that happen, the Earthshot Prize’s visibility on the global stage would increase significantly.
Midway through the Earthshot decade, momentum builds
Prince William, who launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 to champion innovative climate solutions and environmental ingenuity, emphasized the symbolic importance of this year’s ceremony.
“2025 marks the midway point of the Earthshot decade and each year we’ve witnessed the remarkable power of human ingenuity in addressing our planet’s most pressing challenges,” the Prince said.
“As we bring the Earthshot Prize to Brazil, a nation rich in biodiversity and environmental innovation, we are seeing fresh momentum for new ideas to create healthier and safer ways to live our lives. It is an honour to profile the people making our world a better place for us and for our children.”
The choice of Rio de Janeiro is significant, both culturally and ecologically. Brazil is home to the Amazon Rainforest and is a critical player in global climate strategy. The country’s immense biodiversity, coupled with ongoing efforts to protect its natural resources, makes it a fitting backdrop for the Earthshot Prize, which focuses on repairing and safeguarding the planet.
A video celebrating the announcement will feature Prince William alongside an ensemble of Earthshot ambassadors and supporters.
Among those appearing are renowned actress Cate Blanchett, wildlife conservationist and Earthshot global ambassador Robert Irwin, and sports icons such as David Beckham, former footballers Cafu and Mauro Silva, and TV personalities Heidi Klum and Hannah Waddingham.
