Robert Trebor, the beloved character actor best known for his roles as the cunning merchant Salmoneus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, has died at the age of 71. His publicist confirmed that Trebor passed away on April 1 in Los Angeles due to complications from sepsis.
Trebor’s manager, Chuck Binder, described him as a “brilliant, kind, and exceptionally talented man,” noting his ability to bring humor and heart to every role he played. Fans of ’90s fantasy television will remember Trebor for his comic timing, expressive performances, and ability to steal scenes even alongside larger-than-life characters like Hercules and Xena.
His death marks the loss of a key figure in a genre that captivated audiences around the world. While never the lead, Trebor’s Salmoneus was a fan-favorite, often delivering much-needed comic relief in otherwise intense storylines. His performances resonated with viewers who admired his range and dedication.
A career beyond the sword and sandals
Beyond the swords and sandals of ancient fantasy, Trebor also built a diverse and accomplished acting career. He appeared in films such as Purple Rose of Cairo, 52 Pick-Up, and Born on the Fourth of July, showing his versatility in both comedic and dramatic roles. His television credits extended to shows like Supernatural, The Flash, and Days of Our Lives.
