Melania Trump stepped back into the White House spotlight, but the internet’s got her under fire. On April 3, the First Lady made her first public appearance since Donald Trump‘s January 20 inauguration, attending a ceremony honoring the 2025 Teacher of the Year.
Dressed in a chic black blazer and skirt, Melania joined Trump to celebrate educators, but her poised demeanor and minimal interaction with him -she didn’t speak and stood off to the side- sparked a wave of online attacks. “Melania looks like she’d rather be anywhere else,” an X user snarked, while another dubbed her “MAGA Barbie,” hinting she’s all style, no substance.

The event was a big moment-Trump praised the teachers, saying, “You are the best of America,” as he handed out awards in the East Room. Her absence from the campaign trail-like Trump’s hush money trial and Super Tuesday events-had already raised eyebrows, and this appearance didn’t quiet the chatter. “Where has she been?” another X user wondered, noting her low profile since leaving the White House in 2021.

Her return comes after a tough stretch-her mother Amalija Knavs passed away in January 2024, and she’s been focused on son Barron, now 19 and at NYU. Trump’s defended her absence, saying at a 2024 rally, “She’s doing fine, she’s private.” Still, the attacks keep coming-some X users mocked her as “disconnected,” while others praised her grace under pressure.
