ELMONT, N.Y. — A few weeks ago, when Alex Ovechkin’s chase for 895 goals was a little more hypothetical, Ilya Sorokin was asked if he’d given any thought to being the one in net when Ovechkin was at the doorstep of the record.
“I have my own problems,” Sorokin, the New York Islanders goaltender, said. “He is a legend, but I just care about myself.”
Well, now it is Sorokin’s problem. Ovechkin comes to Long Island on Sunday tied with Wayne Gretzky at 894 goals after scoring two at home against the Blackhawks on Friday. The puck drops at 12:30 p.m. ET and airs on TNT, truTV and Max in the United States (and on Monumental in the Washington market) and SN360 in Canada.
Gretzky, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and a traveling party of family, friends and Capitals fans will be on hand at UBS Arena to see if Ovechkin can set the record.
Sorokin has not allowed a goal to Ovechkin yet in seven career appearances against the Capitals. But the way Ovechkin was hunting down goals in the third period on Friday, that surely won’t matter. Ovechkin told Capitals coach Spencer Carbery he did not want to get on the ice with the Chicago net empty late in Friday’s game, but Ovechkin got off a couple of good rips in the final minute that nearly set the record.
