When the Washington Commanders decided to hire Dan Quinn as head coach last season, the organization was looking for an experienced locker room leader who could help improve its defense, which was in crisis.
With Quinn’s previous work as an assistant with the “Legion of Boom“, the Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys, there was hope that he could do a similar job in Washington.

Dan Quinn has exceeded all expectations
Despite the lack of talent, it can be argued that Quinn exceeded all defensive expectations in his first year. Before his hiring, the Commanders had the worst pass defense and one of the worst units in the league overall.
After a year, the Commanders improved to become the 13th best defense in the league overall, and also the third best defense against the pass. 12 wins and a trip to the conference championship game were just the tip of the iceberg.
However, what should be even more exciting for Commanders fans is not the great progress the team made last year, but what that means for the upcoming seasons.
At each of Quinn’s stops, his defenses have improved tremendously from the first to the second year. The Legion of Boom remained a standout unit in consecutive years, and the Falcons (although their stats weren’t great) made it to the Super Bowl when the team rebounded.
The Cowboys went from 20th in the league against the pass to eighth thanks to Quinn and quickly became a top-five unit.
So, while there are doubts about the future for the organization, the reality is that the Commanders should be even better defensively next season than they were last year.
