The Las Vegas Raiders released cornerback Jack Jones on Sunday, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
NFL Network was first to report the news.
The Raiders had been exploring the possibility of trading Jones, who was due to make $3.4 million in 2025, the final year of his contract. Barring a trade, the team had planned to release him.
Jones, 27, has played in 42 games, including 21 starts, across three seasons with the Patriots and Raiders. He has seven career interceptions, four of which he returned for touchdowns, and 136 total tackles.

Flashes of potential, but undisciplined
Jones got off to a strong start to his career with the New England Patriots in 2022, but he struggled to stay healthy on the field and was undisciplined off of it. In the summer of 2023, he was arrested when loaded guns were found in his carry-on luggage at Boston Logan Airport.
While charges were later dropped, the issues didn’t stop there. He missed curfew at the Patriots’ team hotel before their Week 9 contest and was released shortly after.

The Raiders subsequently claimed Jones on waivers. Then-coach Antonio Pierce had coached Jones in high school and college and felt he was worth the risk. Jones rewarded his faith with a brilliant stretch of play in the final seven games of the season.
Jones entered 2024 with high expectations but fell well short. He was a Week 1 starter but was benched in Week 4 due to a lack of effort late in a Week 3 loss to the Carolina Panthers. He started the rest of the season, but his play was wildly inconsistent. He frequently gave up big plays, took unnecessary risks and was a non-factor in run support.
When Pierce was fired following the 2024 season, Jones lost his biggest advocate. After spending a couple of months evaluating, the new regime of general manager John Spytek and coach Pete Carroll ultimately decided to part ways with Jones.
For whichever team acquires Jones, the hope is that he can find consistency on the field and make better decisions off the field. If that comes to fruition, he’s a starting-caliber outside cornerback.
Raiders are short on options in the cornerback room
As for the Raiders, their cornerback room looks pretty thin. At outside cornerback, it’ll be a three-way competition between Jakorian Bennett, Decamerion Richardson and Eric Stokes for the two starting roles. They all have the size, speed and physicality that Carroll is known to like in his outside cornerbacks. The Raiders may feel good about that group, but they’d be wise to explore potential additions via the 2025 draft.
Things are much shakier at nickelback after losing Nate Hobbs to the Green Bay Packers in free agency. As it stands, Darnay Holmes and Thomas Harper would be competing for the starting spot. While both players had their moments in 2024 — and the Raiders could also rotate safeties Isaiah Pola-Mao and Jeremy Chinn in at nickelback — it’s hard to feel good about that spot going into 2025.
Whether it’s an outside corner or nickelback — or someone who can play both — cornerback stands out as a major need for the Raiders going into the draft.
