Southampton have been relegated from the Premier League following Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
The result leaves Ivan Juric’s side an insurmountable 22 points behind 17th-place Wolverhampton Wanderers with seven matches of the league season remaining, meaning they are the first team to be relegated from the Premier League with so many matches remaining in a campaign.

Southampton have won just two Premier League matches all season; defeating Everton 1-0 in early November and winning 2-1 at Ipswich Town on February 1.
The south coast club have only picked up four draws over the season, a home match against Ipswich in September, away matches at Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham in November and December respectively before Wednesday’s draw at home to Crystal Palace.
In December, Southampton sacked Russell Martin, who guided them to promotion back to the top flight last season following success in the Championship play-offs.
Later that month, the club confirmed the appointment of Juric on an 18-month contract.
Juric has overseen two victories — an FA Cup third-round win over Championship side Swansea and the league win at Ipswich — and 16 defeats during his tenure.
Could Southampton be the worst Premier League team ever?
Southampton remain at risk of setting a new record low points tally for a Premier League season, having picked up just 10 points in total so far this campaign after 31 rounds of matches.
Derby County are currently holders of that unwanted record having won just 11 points in the 2007-08 campaign.
Southampton have already surpassed Derby’s number of league wins that season (one) and they have scored more goals (22 compared to 20) but with 25 league defeats this season, are also at risk of losing more than Derby’s 29 games from that historic campaign.
With 74 goals conceded, Southampton are unlikely to surpass the most goals conceded in a Premier League campaign (104) — set by Sheffield United last season — although they still have seven matches remaining.
When could other teams go down?
Leicester City are currently 19th in the Premier League table, one place below Ipswich. As things stand, both will be relegated back to the Championship, the second division of English football.

Leicester currently have 17 points, seven more than Southampton, and 15 behind 17th-place Wolverhampton Wanderers in safety, although Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side have played one game fewer. That swing requires five matches, but depending on results, the earliest Van Nistelrooy’s side will be relegated will be matchday 33.
The earliest that Ipswich, who have 20 points, can be relegated is matchday 34.
What else needs to be resolved in the Premier League?
Liverpool are currently on course to win the Premier League title. They are top of the table, 11 points clear of second-place Arsenal and 16 ahead of Nottingham Forest, in third.
The earliest Arne Slot’s side could win the title is in matchday 33, although it is likely to be several rounds of games later.
There is also a race for the European places, with this season likely to have five Premier League clubs qualifying for the Champions League, alongside additional spots for the Europa League and Conference League.
Alongside Liverpool, Arsenal and Forest, all the clubs down to Bournemouth in 10th have varying degrees of hopes to secure a top-five finish.
Chelsea (53 points) and Manchester City (51) currently occupy fourth and fifth in the standings, although Newcastle United (50) have played one game fewer. A further six points separates the top six down to Bournemouth (45), with Aston Villa, Brighton and Fulham all harbouring outside ambitions of Champions League qualification.
