The Kansas City Chiefs are stirring the pot again, and it’s not just Patrick Mahomes‘ wizardry on the field grabbing attention. On April 4, 2025, Andy Reid and crew welcomed back a familiar face-safety Mike Edwards-signing him to a one-year deal after stints with the Bills and Bucs in 2024.
This reunion with the two-time Super Bowl champ comes hot on the heels of a crushing 40-22 Super Bowl LIX loss to the Eagles, where Mahomes took a beating. And now, a new teammate’s throwing down a challenge to keep the star QB from unraveling in 2025.

Edwards is no stranger to Chiefs Kingdom. Back in 2023, he played all 17 games, snagged two interceptions-including a pick-six-and helped secure Super Bowl LVIII. “Reunion: Veteran safety Mike Edwards is signing with the #Chiefs on a one-year deal,” NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported, sparking excitement.
Reid’s all about it, saying at the NFL Annual Meeting, “We’re building depth.” After Mahomes got sacked six times in that Eagles thrashing, Edwards’ knack for forcing turnovers-he’s got eight career picks-could lighten the load on a defense that still led the AFC with 57 sacks last season.

But here’s the twist: Mahomes isn’t just getting a new defender-he’s getting a wake-up call. Gardner Minshew, signed as the Chiefs’ backup QB on March 17, didn’t sugarcoat it. “I look forward to doing whatever I can to contribute and help this team win,” he told Fox4 News Kansas City.
It’s a polite way of saying Mahomes can’t afford another meltdown like Super Bowl LIX, where the offense sputtered outside the NFL’s top five for the first time in his tenure. Reid’s keeping the faith, though. “He’ll come back even better,” he said, nodding to Mahomes’ offseason work with trainer Bobby Stroupe to sharpen up.
This isn’t a random roster tweak-it’s a dynasty flex. Edwards, at 28, knows Steve Spagnuolo’s system inside out, and his return adds grit to a secondary that lost Justin Reid.
