Die Pokerwelt ist in Aufruhr.
Phil Hellmuth (60), eine lebende Poker-Legende, die den Allzeit-Rekord mit 17 Gold-Armbändern bei der World Series of Poker (WSOP) hält, hat überraschend bekanntgegeben, nicht am diesjährigen Main Event der WSOP teilzunehmen. Seit 1988 war der “Poker Brat” ununterbrochen dabei, doch nun zieht er die Reißleine. Seine Begründung – die physische Belastung des Turniers sei für ältere Spieler kaum noch zu bewältigen.

In einem Video auf X (ehemals Twitter) erklärte der mittlerweile 60-Jährige: „Es ist einfach zu hart. Versucht mal, sieben Tage in Folge von Mittag bis Mitternacht zu spielen. Es ist erschöpfend und hat sich zu einem Ausdauertest entwickelt.“ Hellmuth kritisiert, dass das Turnier weniger die Fähigkeiten als vielmehr die körperliche Ausdauer messe. Er fordert daher Ruhetage, um den Spielern, insbesondere den Senioren, gerecht zu werden.
Während junge Spieler die Strapazen solcher Marathon-Turniere besser wegstecken, geraten ältere Spieler an ihre Grenzen. Die Frage drängt sich auf: Ab wann ist man zu alt für Poker? Die WSOP 2025 reagiert auf diese Diskussion mit einem neuen Turnierformat: dem “Battle of the Ages”. Hier treten Spieler über 50 Jahre zunächst getrennt von den Jüngeren an, bevor sie später im Turnier aufeinandertreffen. Dieses Format soll den unterschiedlichen physischen Voraussetzungen Rechnung tragen und für Chancengleichheit sorgen. Ob sich dieses Format künftig durchsetzt, bleibt abzuwarten.
[–>Die Debatte über Altersgrenzen im Poker ist nicht neu, erhält durch Hellmuths Rückzug jedoch neue Brisanz. Einige Profis teilen seine Bedenken, andere sehen darin eine natürliche Selektion. Scott Seiver (39) kommentierte: „Wenn wir älter werden, werden wir schlechter. Das ist das Leben, wir alle müssen das akzeptieren.“
Poker ist ein Spiel, das mentale Stärke und physische Ausdauer erfordert. Die WSOP steht vor der Herausforderung, Formate zu entwickeln, die sowohl jungen Talenten als auch erfahrenen Veteranen gerecht werden. Ob Ruhetage oder altersgerechte Turniere die Lösung sind, wird die Zukunft zeigen. Hellmuths Entscheidung hat jedenfalls eine längst überfällige Diskussion neu entfacht.

Jack Draper says tennis must adapt its annual calendar in order to avoid the volume of injuries sustained on tour.Draper, along with a host of other elite players including compatriot Emma Raducanu, Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune, is recovering from injury.
