Being the parent of a world-famous athlete isn’t something you can prepare for, just ask Randi Mahomes, mother of Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes.
As she reflects on raising the three-time Super Bowl champion, Randi has revealed that one pivotal conversation with her son forced her to rethink everything she thought she knew about parenting.
After divorcing former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr. in 2006, Randi raised Patrick and his two siblings – Jackson and Mia – largely on her own. Balancing work, parenting, and supporting her kids’ ambitions was no easy task. Still, she did it all with unwavering dedication and faith.
“Being a single mother of three kids… working two jobs was hard. It was something I prayed about constantly, asking God to be there and guide me,” Randi shared in a candid video posted to her social media.
Her honesty resonated with many parents who often feel the same pressure to give their children the world, especially when it comes to sports and academics.
But even the most devoted parents sometimes get it wrong. Randi admits that her son Patrick made a comment that caused her to pause and reflect deeply.
A son’s honesty prompts a new outlook
“There was a time when Patrick came to me and said something that made me completely rethink how I was supporting him. And let me tell you, it wasn’t easy to hear,” Randi revealed.
While she hasn’t disclosed the exact words, the impact was significant enough to change her approach as a parent.
It was a moment that didn’t just resonate emotionally, it sparked a meaningful shift. That revelation inspired her upcoming Zoom session, where she plans to speak candidly about the lessons she’s learned raising a young athlete who became one of the most famous football players in the world.
In another recent post, Randi emphasized the importance of understanding what her children need emotionally, not just practically.
“As a sports parent, you want to be involved in everything. You want to cheer the loudest, give the best advice. But sometimes, support means stepping back,” she explained.
Learning and growing through expert advice
To further grow as a parent, Randi recently turned to Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, a licensed psychologist and performance coach, to help understand how she could better support her children during high-stakes moments.
She shared a clip of their conversation online, asking about how her kids – particularly Patrick and youngest daughter Mia – can make smart, confident decisions when the pressure is high.
Dr. Lombardo suggested a simple but effective technique: “The best way to calm down and make good decisions under pressure is to take a deep breath in and then exhale twice as long. That brings the brain out of the stress response and into rational thinking.”
This approach, Randi noted, is now something she tries to share with her kids – not just during games, but in everyday life. It’s become part of her broader commitment to being present, supportive, and mindful as a mom.
Though she has faced her fair share of challenges and second guesses, Randi Mahomes‘ journey is a reminder that even the parents of the most elite athletes are still learning.
As she continues to grow alongside her children, her honesty and willingness to change set a powerful example for families everywhere.
