Hanning erklärt: „Mark und Emil haben für den VfL Geschichte geschrieben und ihre Namen werden immer mit der erfolgreichsten Zeit dieses Klubs verbunden sein. Ole und Sergej sind vor zwei Jahren zu uns gekommen und haben sich mit ganzem Herzen dem Projekt gewidmet und ich habe ihre Art sehr geschätzt, sich immer wieder in den Dienst der Mannschaft zu stellen für den gemeinsamen Erfolg. Bei Martin war es klar, dass er auf jeden Fall nur für die erste Liga gekommen ist, die wir nun mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit wieder verlassen. Die Leistung in den letzten Spielen zeigt, dass er der Mannschaft mehr geben kann.“

Hanning stellt die Mannschaft komplett neu zusammen, sagt: „Die Rückrunde hat gezeigt, dass es zu einer Umstrukturierung kommen muss. Das sind immer schmerzhafte, aber am Ende auch notwendige Prozesse. Wir müssen aus unserem alten Trott ausbrechen und wir haben uns entschieden, dass wir vom Trainer überzeugt sind und so den neuen Weg gehen wollen. Wir wollen nicht mehr mit dem Alten auf was Neues hoffen.“

Diese Fünf und dazu haben Elias Kofler (Hamburg), Maxim Orlov (Hannover), Cyrill Akakpo und Josip Simic (beide Wetzlar) schon neue Verträge in der Daikin Handball-Bundesliga.
Wo die fünf Spieler jetzt hingehen, wurde noch nicht verkündet. Allerdings hat der VfL auch diese Neuzugänge schon verpflichtet: den Italiener Gabriele Sontacchi (SSV Bozen), den Österreicher Markus Mahr (Bregenz Handball), Tim Hildenbrand (HSG Krefeld Niederrhein) und Florian Budde aus der Talentschmiede der Füchse.
