The stakes don’t get much higher than this for the Dallas Wings. Holding the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, the franchise is staring at a generational opportunity – or a potentially historic mistake.
All signs point toward Paige Bueckers, the UConn star fresh off a national championship, being the player Dallas will select. She is widely viewed as the clear-cut best prospect in this draft class – perhaps one of the most hyped players to enter the WNBA in a decade.

But while every team dreams of landing a player like Bueckers, the Wings have found themselves in a position where they might not even need to answer the phone.
No one dares to call Dallas about the No. 1 pick
According to Rebecca Lobo, former player and respected WNBA analyst, the possibility of Dallas moving the pick is so remote that rival teams aren’t even bothering to call.
“I think people assume that number one is untouchable because of Paige Bueckers is that kind of player,” Lobo said, via Sara Jane Gamelli of Ballislife.
This is rare air in professional sports. Typically, even teams holding the top pick field calls from desperate general managers willing to offer future assets or even established stars.
But in this case, the Wings might as well turn their phones off altogether.
There’s simply no real expectation that Curt Miller, Dallas’ general manager, would listen – unless a rival team were willing to offer an extraordinary package involving multiple superstars.
And in a league where teams are reluctant to part with top talent for unproven prospects, those offers may never come.
Bueckers could reshape the Wings – and the WNBA
Paige Bueckers isn’t just another talented draft prospect – she’s a player with the potential to change a franchise overnight.
After leading UConn to the national championship and cementing herself as the most dominant player in college basketball, Bueckers has become the obvious No. 1 pick.
Her path to the WNBA has been carefully built – and it comes at a time when the Wings already have star power in place, led by scoring machine Arike Ogunbowale.
Reports suggest Ogunbowale is already looking forward to the possibility of teaming up with Bueckers, a combination that could immediately lift Dallas into the championship conversation.
Keeping a franchise cornerstone like Ogunbowale happy is essential. The addition of Bueckers not only gives Dallas another elite scorer and playmaker – it shows the commitment to building a winner right now.
A moment of truth awaits at the 2025 WNBA Draft
The 2025 WNBA Draft will be held Monday in New York, and for the Wings, the message is simple: Don’t overthink it.
Trading the pick would require a truly earth-shattering offer – the kind that simply doesn’t happen often in the WNBA.
And even if Dallas were to receive such a call, moving the No. 1 selection would risk a mistake fans – and the league – would talk about for years.
More than likely, Dallas will keep it simple. They’ll take Paige Bueckers, build their future around her and Arike Ogunbowale, and watch the rest of the league scramble to catch up.
Sometimes the smartest move is also the easiest one.
