The Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback offseason overhaul continues, this time with a familiar face. The Seahawks are expected to sign quarterback Drew Lock, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
Initially part of the 2022 trade package Seattle received for sending Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, Lock competed for the starting quarterback role that offseason. After Geno Smith won the job, Lock served as the team’s backup quarterback for two seasons. He started two games for Seattle, finishing 1-1 while throwing for 543 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

In 2024, Lock signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants. Mostly a backup, Lock was thrust into a starting role following the release of Daniel Jones and an injury to Tommy DeVito. Going 1-4 in his five starts, Lock’s lone win saw him throw for four touchdowns, commit zero turnovers and rush for an additional score in a 45-33 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Lock finished the season with 1,071 passing yards, six passing touchdowns and five interceptions.
Lock is the Seahawks’ second quarterback addition of the offseason. In March, they signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million deal. They also have former Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell on the roster.
How does Lock fit into the new-look QB room?
In 2023, Lock appeared in four games with consecutive starts in Weeks 14 and 15. In those four games, he completed 63.2 percent of his passes and threw for 543 yards on 7.1 yards per attempt, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He lost his first game as a starter against San Francisco, then threw a game-winning touchdown against the Eagles the following week. After the season, Lock said he considered himself a starter. Now, he’s returning as the backup to Sam Darnold.
Seattle’s other backup is Sam Howell, acquired in a trade with the Washington Commanders in March 2024 after Lock signed with the Giants in free agency. When asked at the NFL Scouting Combine about whether Howell was a potential starter, Seattle general manager John Schneider said he’d like to evaluate the 2022 fifth-round pick in Klint Kubiak’s offense, which will feature more bootlegs and pocket movement than Ryan Grubb’s scheme. Grubb’s offense, Schneider said, “wasn’t a good setup” for Howell, who didn’t play well in his only extended action of the season against the Packers in Week 15. — Michael-Shawn Dugar, Seahawks beat writer

Could Seattle still draft a QB?
Signing Lock is unlikely to affect whether Seattle drafts a quarterback. Schneider is open to drafting one every year, and coach Mike Macdonald feels the same way. A quarterback depth chart featuring Darnold, Lock and Howell — three guys who have each had at least one failed stint as a starter — probably won’t dissuade Schneider from investing in a prospect he views as a potential starter. — Dugar
