Just one day before Euphoria actor Eric Dane publicly revealed he’s been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, shared heartfelt words about their enduring connection-calling him her “best friend” and reflecting on the strength of their years together.
Speaking at a Los Angeles screening of The Carters: Hurts to Love You on April 9, Gayheart emphasized how she and Dane, despite their separation, continue to share a deep, supportive bond.

“We are best of friends. We are really close,” Gayheart said. “We are great co-parents. I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure.”
Rather than viewing their split as something negative, Gayheart expressed pride in the life they built.
“It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success. We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years, and we had two beautiful kids so I think that’s a successful relationship,” she added.
Dane stays focused on work as he battles ALS
The following day, Dane confirmed the diagnosis in a statement to PEOPLE, revealing that he had been diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually weakening voluntary muscle movement.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” Dane said. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week.”
Dane is expected to resume filming the hit HBO series on April 14, continuing his role despite the difficult diagnosis. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig‘s disease, has no known cure and often results in increasing physical limitations. However, Dane‘s optimism and resolve to keep working highlight his determination to maintain a sense of normalcy amid the changes ahead.
Gayheart, who filed for divorce in 2018, officially withdrew the petition in March 2025. Despite the couple’s previous separation, they have remained closely connected for the sake of their children-daughters Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.
Their family dynamic has drawn attention not just for its stability post-split but also for its evolving nature. While Dane has recently been seen spending time with Priya Jain, Gayheart has continued to speak warmly of him in public and reaffirm her focus on co-parenting.
“We are doing our best to co-parent and maintain a family,” Gayheart previously stated.
