Flau’Jae Johnson had every reason to declare for the WNBA Draft this year. The LSU guard had the talent, the experience, and the eligibility.
But when the dust settled on LSU‘s season after their Elite Eight exit, Big 4 wasn’t headed to the pros-instead, she chose to run it back in Baton Rouge.
Kim Mulkey gives evil look to Flau’Jae Johnson and sparks debate over if she’s a sore loser
The decision didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. Back in November, Johnson casually teased the idea that she might be draft-bound.
“If you don’t know, I am eligible for the [WNBA] Draft this year. So I’m kind of just letting God guide me,” she said.
But as LSU‘s season wrapped, fans began to worry. With Aneesah Morrow declaring for the WNBA, and Sa’Myah Smith and Last-Tear Poa entering the transfer portal, a roster reset seemed imminent. Johnson staying put wasn’t just a bonus-it was a relief.
On her Best of Both Worlds podcast, Johnson gave the inside scoop on her thought process.
“As far as the draft, I thought about it,” she said. “But I’m like, you know I’m not, first of all, not trying to go out on an L, and second of all, you got to think about the CBA and all of that. Third, I want to try to win like I want to go out on a win, and it’s just like, I know I could develop more like I’m a great player, and I can’t turn it on and off, you know what I’m saying?”
She made her decision before LSU’s March Madness heartbreak. And she wasn’t alone in weighing the pros and cons. Johnson leaned on head coach Kim Mulkey, a coach she’s built a close relationship with during her time in Baton Rouge.
“I talked to Coach Mulkey, and we just had a real conversation. I told her some real stuff about how I’ve been feeling,” Johnson revealed. “I think that conversation really helped us and see what we both see in how I can make this year my best year.”
Johnson’s decision blends business, legacy and loyalty
It’s not hard to understand why Johnson would stay. The current WNBA rookie salary is around $78,000.
But with a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on the horizon, the base salary could spike significantly next year.
Waiting could mean more money-and a higher draft position if she continues to improve.
