Bittere Tränen bei der BG Göttingen. Der Abstieg aus der Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga stand zwar seit Wochen praktisch fest. Doch sechs Spieltage vor Schluss ist es nun amtlich.
Die „Veilchen“ kassierten beim 77:101 im Derby bei den Löwen Braunschweig die 18. Pleite in Serie. Parallel gewann der Vorletzte Frankfurt Skyliners 76:70 gegen die Telekom Baskets Bonn. Damit war der zweite Göttinger Abstieg nach 2012 rechnerisch besiegelt.
„Dass dieser Punkt kommt, war klar. Aber jetzt, wo es schwarz auf weiß ist, tut es weh“, sagte Kapitän Mathis Mönninghoff (33) mit geröteten Augen bei Dyn. Der dienstälteste Göttinger war 2018 zur BG gekommen – zuvor war er nach einer schlimmen Saison mit den Tigers Tübingen abgestiegen.

Ich bin unfassbar stolz auf die Fans, die trotz der Situation herkommen und sich den Arsch aufreißen, nur um uns spielen zu sehen. Auch zu Hause Geld ausgeben uns spielen zu sehen. Das ist nicht selbstverständlich. Da bin ich unfassbar dankbar für. Aber es ist hart.“

Zum vorerst letzten Niedersachsen-Derby hatten 100 Fans das Team begleitet und bis zum Schluss angefeuert. Mönninghoff: „Mir tut es einfach nur unfassbar Leid für die Leute, die da arbeiten, für die Fans. Ja, es tut weh.“
Bis zur Halbzeit waren die Göttinger dran (45:49) – im dritten Viertel drehte das Team von NBA-Star Dennis Schröder (31/Detroit Pistons) vor 4696 Zuschauern auf. Bester Mann war Braunschweigs Sananda Fru (21) mit 18 Punkten. Herausragend: Der Big Man, der im Sommer an die University of Louisville in die NCAA wechselt, glänzte mit einer 100-prozentigen Trefferquote und verwandelt alle sieben Versuche aus dem Feld sowie vier Freiwürfe.

Schwacher Trost für die BG Göttingen: Egal, ob sie noch eines ihrer Spiele gewinnen oder nicht – sie sind NICHT das schlechteste Basketball-Bundesliga-Team aller Zeiten!
Die Tübinger Abstiegs-Mannschaft von 2018 gewann zwar auch nur eine Partie, damals bestand die BBL aber aus 18 Teams. Heißt: Tübingen kassierte faktisch eine Pleite mehr (33).
Zudem gab es in der Geschichte der BBL sogar acht Mannschaften, die in einer Saison kein einziges Spiel gewannen!
BG-Boss Frank Meinertshagen (57) plant schon seit Wochen die kommende Saison in der zweiten Liga (ProA). Trotzdem nahm auch ihn die Pleite in Braunschweig mit. „Wenn diese Saison mich persönlich etwas gelehrt hat, dann ist das Demut“, sagte er auf Dyn. „Ich glaube, dass es für uns das Ziel sein muss, wieder aufzusteigen. Dafür bringen wir einfach zu viel mit an dem Standort. Aber das ist keine Selbstverständlichkeit. Das wird nicht einfach. Und das kann ich versprechen: Dass wir alles dafür geben werden, wieder aufzusteigen. Aber ein Selbstläufer wird das nicht.“
Der Vertrag mit Trainer Mikko Riipinen (37) gilt auch für die ProA. Eigengewächs Jannis Jünemann (19) hat schon bekundet, dass er bleiben will. Und auch mit Kapitän Mönninghoff laufen Gespräche.
