Alexander Volkanovski (27-4) made history once again at UFC 314 as he was crowned featherweight champion once again after defeatingDiego Lopes (26-7) by unanimous decision in an exciting fight at the Kaseya Center in Miami. The victory allowed him to regain the belt that had been vacated afterIlia Topuria (16-0) moved up to the lightweight division.
With this victory, Volkanovski became the first fighter to win an undisputed title after suffering two consecutive defeats, and also the first to do so in a lightweight division over 35 years of age.
Best KO of the year? Mauricio Ruffy shocked UFC 313 with brutal kick
According to Israel Adesanya, who was on Volkanovski’s staff, the Australian lost his vision during the fight, which makes his feat even greater.
“Apparently, he lost sight in the third round,” Adesanya said in a post-fight interview for the PPV broadcast, adding: “Yes, it’s breaking news. He lost sight in his left eye. I understood why he was getting on the bike so much in the third round. I don’t know how, what happened, if it was blood or maybe a knuckle or something like that.”
Volkanovski confirms loss of vision
Diego Lopes did not manage to display his best version, although he managed to put Volkanovski in trouble at certain stages of the fight, but it was not enough to break the control of the Australian, who dominated with excellent distance management, a very effective jab and more than 100 significant strikes connected.
Volkanovski acknowledged that a strike from Lopes that dropped him in the second round left him blind in his left eye: “It was a good shot, but then I couldn’t see, and I was trying to get it back, but I’d completely lost it,” he said, adding that afterwards his vision “slowly came back. At least for most of the fight, I could see a little bit blurry, which helped because it disappeared out of nowhere.”
The return of ‘Volk’ was forceful. After the K.O. defeats against Islam Makhachev (27-1) and Ilia Topuria, he showed a renewed version that reminded of the dominant champion of recent years. The fight was decided on points, and with it, the belt returned to his hands.
