NHL roundup: Jets earn Presidents’ Trophy despite setback

Corey Perry finished with a goal and an assist to help lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-1 road victory Sunday over the first-place Winnipeg Jets, who despite the loss secured their first Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history.

The Jets were pursued for the best overall league record by the Washington Capitals, who suffered a 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier in the day.

Connor Brown, Adam Henrique and Viktor Arvidsson also scored for the injury-plagued Oilers, while Stuart Skinner tallied 17 saves. Connor McDavid brought his season-long point total up to 99 with a pair of assists.

Alex Iafallo scored the Jets’ lone goal and Eric Comrie stopped 35 shots in a rare start.

Blue Jackets 4, Capitals 1

Adam Fantilli scored twice and Jet Greaves came up big again for visiting Columbus, which kept its playoff hopes alive by spurring a comeback victory over Washington.

Zach Werenski and Dmitri Voronkov also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won four straight. Ivan Provorov, Sean Monahan, Kent Johnson and James van Riemsdyk recorded assists. Greaves made 29 saves to earn his third straight victory since being recalled from AHL affiliate Cleveland on Thursday. The Blue Jackets are three points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the Eastern Conference’s final wild-card spot. Both teams have two games remaining.

For the Capitals, Alex Ovechkin scored for the first time since breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record last Sunday. Charlie Lindgren finished with 19 saves.

Islanders 1, Devils 0

Ilya Sorokin posted a shutout in his return from injury for visiting New York, which edged New Jersey in Newark.

Sorokin, who missed the previous two games with a lower-body injury, made 25 saves as the surprise starter for the Islanders. who were eliminated from playoff contention Saturday. With 22 shutouts, Sorokin is tied with Hall of Famer Billy Smith for the second- most in Islanders history behind Chico Resch (25).

Bo Horvat scored the only goal late in the second period, while Jacob Markstrom recorded 21 saves for the playoff-bound Devils, who have lost three straight, all in regulation. New Jersey will play the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Bruins 4, Penguins 1

Elias Lindholm had a goal and an assist and Boston beat host Pittsburgh.

Fabian Lysell, Morgan Geekie and Jakub Lauko also scored for the Bruins, who had lost two of their previous three. David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha each had two assists and Joonas Korpisalo made 23 saves. Pastrnak stretched his point streak to nine games (eight goals, 12 assists).

Rickard Rakell provided the offense for the Penguins, who had won two straight. Tristan Jarry stopped 28 shots.

Senators 4, Flyers 3 (OT)

Tim Stutzle’s second goal of the game came with 3:20 remaining in overtime, and Ottawa stayed hot with a victory over visiting Philadelphia.

After tying things twice on third-period goals from Fabian Zetterlund and Thomas Chabot, the Senators earned a 4-on-3 power play in overtime. And Stutzle came through after a perfect seam pass from Drake Batherson to beat Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov (21 saves). Chabot also had two assists and Stutzle added one for playoff-bound Ottawa, which won its fifth straight at home. The Senators are 15-5-1 since the beginning of March, and 21-6-1 at home since Nov. 25.

Garnet Hathaway had a goal with an assist for Philadelphia, which will miss the playoffs for a fifth straight season, but is 5-1-1 under interim coach Brad Shaw.

Maple Leafs 4, Hurricanes 1

William Nylander scored his team-leading 45th goal of the season and Toronto defeated Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.

Pontus Holmberg, Auston Matthews and John Tavares also scored for the Maple Leafs. Morgan Rielly added three assists, Max Domi had two assists and Joseph Woll stopped 25 shots.

Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes and Frederik Andersen made 16 saves. Carolina failed to set a team record for home wins, finishing with 31 to match its 2005-06 squad.

Flames 5, Sharks 2

Yegor Sharangovich broke a third-period tie in a two-goal game while Adam Klapka collected one goal and one assist as host Calgary kept its playoff hopes alive with a victory over San Jose.

MacKenzie Weegar and Matt Coronato also scored for the Flames. Jonathan Huberdeau collected two assists. Goaltender Dustin Wolf made 28 saves and has beaten the Sharks in seven of his eight career games against them. The Flames are two points back of the St. Louis Blues for the Western Conference’s second wild-card position, and three behind the Minnesota Wild.

Tyler Toffoli netted one goal and one assist, and Jan Rutta tallied the other goal for the Sharks, who sit last in the league and have lost nine consecutive games. Goalie Georgi Romanov stopped 25 shots.

Avalanche 4, Ducks 2

Wyatt Aamodt’s first NHL goal sparked a four-goal third period, and visiting Colorado rallied to beat Anaheim.

Charlie Coyle had a goal and two assists, Jack Drury had one of each and Erik Johnson also scored for the Avalanche, which sat several of their top players in their final game of the regular season. Scott Wedgewood had 18 saves for Colorado, which used an AHL-heavy lineup.

Mason McTavish and Sam Colangelo had goals and Lukas Dostal turned away 20 shots for the Ducks.
