Die Spieler sollten den Pott schon mal hochheben, um das Gefühl zu manifestieren: So ist es, die Trophäe in den eigenen Händen zu halten. Stuttgart gelang mit dem 3:1 der so wichtige Einzug ins Pokalfinale am 24. Mai gegen Bielefeld in Berlin.
„Der Einzug ins Pokalfinale ist für uns nicht nur sportlich, sondern auch finanziell von enormer Bedeutung“, sagt der Vorstandsboss Alexander Wehrle (50). Neben Pokalprämien von rund sechs Mio. Euro würde der VfB beim Sieg im Finale gegen den Drittligisten durch Zusatz-Zahlungen von Sponsoren und mit der automatischen Qualifikation für die Europa League noch mal mindestens 14 Mio. mehr einnehmen. Der Triumph im DFB-Pokal wäre für Stuttgart also 20 Mio. Euro wert.
