Mario de Luis (2002, Madrid) entendió hace tiempo que lo más importante de todo es saber aprovechar las oportunidades que da el fútbol y la vida. Y es que por muy complicada que pueda parecer una situación, la justicia futbolística casi siempre acaba imponiéndose si uno no deja de trabajar y mantiene una actitud positiva en cada entrenamiento. Sin embargo, su caso, diferente al del resto, no ha sido nada fácil.
Y es que el golpe mas duro de todos no llegó bajo palos, donde siempre ha sido capaz de mostrar una actitud inquebrantable ante cualquier desafío. El portero español tuvo que hacer frente a un incalculable dolor tras la pérdida de su padre a finales de 2024, algo que le hizo relativizar su ostracismo en el terreno de juego. Con él analizaba todos sus partidos una y otra vez para que no se escapase ningún detalle y, aquel sueño de ver a su hijo jugando en el Madrid, estuvo más cerca que nunca de cumplirse la temporada pasada cuando la megafonía del Bernabéu dibujó una sonrisa eterna en un rostro que vio a su hijo dar sus primeros pasos sobre el césped antes del Clásico.

En 2023 sufrió una lesión en el peroné que le obligó a pasar por el quirófano y perderse tanto los playoff de ascenso con el Real Madrid Castilla como el Europeo Sub-21. Así las cosas, se avecinaba una temporada, la última que marca su contrato con el Madrid, complicada. Sin embargo, ese golpe de madurez a sus 22 años le hizo encararlo todo desde otra perspectiva hasta lograr un renacer casi inexplicable en Valdebebas. Y es que como bien explicó en la emotiva carta dedicada a su padre (“Como siempre has dicho ‘la vida es como un partido de futbol, a veces, se pierde'”), Mario tenía claro su propósito.
El guardameta español ha pasado en siete meses de ser el cuarto portero del Real Madrid Castilla, al no encontrar una salida satisfactoria en verano, a hacerse con la titularidad de la portería de Raúl y debutar con la selección española sub-21. Un logro sin precedentes para un portero en La Fábrica. Tardó 258 días en regresar a la acción… y lo hizo con una victoria por todo lo grande (1-4) en el Estadio Nuevo Mirador. Una historia de redención que tenía una dedicatoria clara. “Que ganas tenía de poder dedicarte esto, papá. Sé que lo has disfrutado mucho. Te quiero”.
Para llegar a este punto, la fortaleza mental jugó un papel tan determinante como el saber aceptar la suplencia en un deporte, más aún si eres portero, que puede ser muy cruel. Costó entender las pocas oportunidades con las que contó para defender la portería del equipo de su vida tras aterrizar en 2010. Sin embargo, desde su ‘redebut’, Mario acumula 9 partidos sin conocer la derrota en el Castilla con números que asustan.
Cuatro porterías a cero, 3 victorias y 6 empates… y tan solo seis goles encajados. Así las cosas, con su etapa en el Madrid llegando al final del trayecto, a Mario no le quedará otra que hacer sus maletas para seguir cumpliendo objetivos. “Sé que vas a seguir ayudándome a conseguir mi sueño y el día que lleguemos a Primera le daré el abrazo más grande que pueda a mamá para que te llegue a ti también“, aseguró sobre un reto por el que no va a descansar jamás hasta lograrlo.
