The Dallas Cowboys are deep into negotiations to secure star linebacker Micah Parsons with a blockbuster contract extension that could reshape the defensive pay scale in the NFL.
Talks have been active for weeks, and initial proposals are reportedly circling around a five-year, $200 million deal-averaging $40 million per year-according to early reporting from CowboysCountry.com.
Owner Jerry Jones has confirmed that both sides are aligned on most key issues, signaling progress toward finalizing the deal. However, agent David Mulugheta has been absent from early discussions, which has contributed to the delay in crossing the finish line.
Despite that, Parsons is showing full commitment to the team, even attending voluntary offseason workouts. His presence reinforces his leadership in the locker room and his intent to stay a Cowboy for years to come.
Rumors of a trade? Cowboys push back
As contract talks have stretched out, speculative trade rumors have popped up-particularly from media outlets suggesting a dramatic draft-day move. These reports cite the financial strain of a Parsons mega-deal, especially in light of Myles Garrett‘s recent market-resetting contract.
But the Cowboys’ leadership isn’t buying it. Jerry Jones publicly dismissed any idea of trading Parsons, stating clearly that such a move “has never been uttered in this organization.” Likewise, Stephen Jones has said he can’t imagine a future where Parsons isn’t wearing the star.
Longtime Cowboys insider Mike Fisher has also pushed back on the rumor mill, calling it “reckless” and “false.” Reports that suggest tension between Parsons and the front office, or label him as “trade bait,” have no grounding in reality, according to multiple sources close to the team.
With four Pro Bowl selections already under his belt and stats that place him among the league’s elite defenders-52.5 sacks and 122 QB hits in just four seasons-Parsons is arguably the NFL’s premier defensive force.
The Cowboys aren’t interested in flipping that kind of talent for a “king’s ransom” in draft picks. Instead, their focus remains squarely on two goals: building through the draft and locking down their defensive cornerstone for the long haul.
