Světový šampionát v roce 2030 bude hostit Maroko společně se Španělskem a Portugalskem. Úvodní tři zápasy turnaje se odehrají v Argentině, Paraguayi a Uruguayi, kde se v roce 1930 uskutečnilo první mistrovství světa. A právě kvůli stoletému výročí navrhl v minulém týdnu prezident CONMEBOL Alejandro Domínguez turnaj rozšířit.
„Nemyslím si, že rozšíření mistrovství světa na 64 týmů je tím správným krokem. Nejen pro turnaj samotný, ale i pro celý fotbalový ekosystém od reprezentací přes klubové soutěže a ligy až po hráče,“ řekl Montagliani. „Ještě jsme ani nevyzkoušeli nový formát s 48 účastníky,“ dodal.
Na mistrovství světa v roce 2022 v Kataru startovalo 32 reprezentací. Nejbližší šampionát se uskuteční v příštím roce v Kanadě, Mexiku a USA a poprvé se ho zúčastní 48 týmů.
Příznivcem zvyšování počtu účastníků velkých akcí je i prezident FIFA Gianni Infantino. Rozšířené turnaje mají podle něj pozitivní vliv na rozvoj fotbalu ve světě. FIFA zatím sdělila, že možnosti jihoamerického návrhu prověří.
