Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said he does not know what his future holds as his side focuses on a “never-ending season” after they exited the Champions League on Wednesday.
Madrid’s reign as European champions came to an end as they were defeated 5-1 on aggregate by Arsenal at the quarter-final stage. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal a 2-1 win in the second leg at the Bernabeu.

Ancelotti, the first and only manager to win the Champions League five times, said his team are at a “disadvantage” because of their schedule, having frequently criticised the European football calendar this season as his side struggle with injuries.
“We are at a disadvantage, but we are in the fight for La Liga, we have the game against Barcelona, we have the Copa del Rey final, we have the Club World Cup in a never-ending season,” he told Spanish television channel Movistar Plus.
Ancelotti also admitted after the Arsenal game that it could have been his last Champions League match and that he does not know what lies ahead for him at Madrid.
His contract in the Spanish capital runs until 2026, but The Athletic reported in March that Brazil are interested in having Ancelotti lead the team into the 2026 World Cup.
“My last Champions League game? This season, yes,” the Italian said when asked if he’s coached his last game in the competition. “We’ve come a fantastic way over the years. Let’s see what happens next year. I don’t know what’s going to happen and I don’t want to know. There is time for this.”
Ancelotti was asked the same question in his post-match press conference, this time stating: “It can happen, if the club decides to change. There is no problem at all: the day I finish here, I can only do one thing, thank the club. If my contract ends or not, I don’t care.”
Madrid, second in La Liga, return to action on Sunday when they host Athletic Club. Their next shot at silverware comes on April 26, when they take on rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final.
