O espectador que jogou uma garrafa no ciclista holandês Mathieu van der Poel durante a prova Paris-Roubaix de domingo emitiu um pedido de desculpas por escrito ao vencedor da “Rainha das Clássicas”. Segundo o jornal belga Het Laatse Nieuws, o homem reconheceu ter cometido um “gesto estúpido” e celebrou a vitória do atleta.
“Estou muito feliz por ele ter cruzado a linha de chegada em primeiro no domingo, apesar do meu gesto estúpido. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, percebo que tenho que me desculpar com todos os atletas e fãs da modalidade”, escreveu o torcedor belga, natural de Waregem, em um e-mail publicado na edição de quarta-feira do jornal flamengo.
A equipe de Van der Poel, a Alpecin-Deceuninck, anunciou uma ação judicial contra o espectador, à qual a União Ciclística Internacional (UCI) poderá aderir.
“Havia uma lata de água na grama. Peguei e joguei quando ele passou. Sem pensar duas vezes. Meio segundo depois, percebi o quão estúpido e perigoso era. Estou me sentindo muito mal há alguns dias”, acrescentou o jovem de 28 anos, que admitiu ter “bebido muito” durante o dia.
O Ministério Público de Lille também anunciou uma investigação sobre o incidente, que ocorreu quando o líder da corrida cruzava o trecho de paralelepípedos de Templeuve, a cerca de 33 km da linha de chegada no velódromo de Roubaix, no Nordeste da França, muito perto da fronteira com a Bélgica.
— É inaceitável. [A garrafa] Estava cheia, pesava meio quilo, e eu estava pedalando a 40 quilômetros por hora. É como levar uma pedrada no rosto — declarou Mathieu van der Poel ao final da Paris-Roubaix, prova que venceu pelo terceiro ano consecutivo.
O espectador negou ser fã do ciclista belga Wout Van Aert, um dos maiores rivais do tricampeão, e negou a intenção de fazer o holandês perder a corrida. O torcedor disse que não tinha “um ciclista favorito” na disputa.
Não foi a primeira vez que o campeão mundial de 2023 enfrentou ataques de espectadores. Durante a E3 Classic em março, um espectador cuspiu em sua direção.
