Mikel Arteta said Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu is among the best moments of his career.
Arsenal won 2-1 in Madrid on Wednesday to secure a 5-1 aggregate victory over the defending European champions.
It marks a just a third Champions League semi-final in club history for Arsenal, and first since 2009.

“One of the best nights in my football career for sure,” Arteta told TNT Sports. “A really special one; we’ve played against the team with the biggest history, that has been an inspiration for all of us in this competition.
“To be able to win the tie in the manner that we’ve done, I think we have to be really proud of ourselves.”
Bukayo Saka had a penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois and Real Madrid had a spot kick of their own overturned following a lengthy VAR review in an eventful first half, with Declan Rice judged to not have fouled Kylian Mbappe after a stoppage of over five minutes.
Saka atoned for his miss as he extended Arsenal’s lead shortly after the hour mark, before Vinicius Junior capitalised on a William Saliba error just two minutes later to pull one back for the hosts. Gabriel Martinelli scored a stoppage time winner, ensuring victory on the night and comfortably on aggregate.
Arsenal had taken a 3-0 lead from the first leg to the Bernabeu, but Madrid had spoken of hopes of a Remontada (comeback) in the second leg at home. Arteta praised how his side handled the partisan atmosphere on Wednesday.
“I’m really proud. It’s my first time on that touchline (at the Bernabeu),” Arteta added. “And after two, three minutes you realise that anything can happen in this stadium. And you have to be there to realise that and I did straight away; if something goes wrong, if they score a goal, game on.
“Fortunately a lot went for us but I think we did what we had to do to win the game.”
Arteta’s side will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals. Luis Enrique’s side have already eliminated Liverpool and Aston Villa in this year’s competition.
