With seven Olympic medals and a legendary legacy, Simone Biles made a surprise stop at LSU’s training facility in Baton Rouge to support freshman Zoe Miller, her longtime friend and fellow alum of World Champions Centre in Texas, back in March.
She offered encouragement, advice, and her signature electric presence as LSU’s gymnasts soaked up every second.
Yet, Olivia Dunne was missing from the moment, still sidelined by an avulsion fracture in her knee suffered back in January. Though she couldn’t be there physically, Dunne had her own encounter with Biles lined up-and this one was bound to be unforgettable.
From childhood fangirl to Kentucky Derby co-star
This won’t be the first time Dunne and Biles have crossed paths, but it might be the most glamorous. Their connection dates back to 2015 when a 12-year-old Dunne, beaming with awe, met Biles at the WOGA Classic.
That photo-featuring Biles, Dunne, Olympic champion Nastia Liukin, and Madison Rau-quickly became a prized memory in Dunne’s scrapbook.
“Nastia, Simone, Maddie #wogaclassic2015,” she captioned the snapshot.
By 2018, their relationship had grown from fan to peer as Dunne joined Biles at a National Team training camp. At that point, Biles had already captured four Olympic golds and was dominating the sport post-Rio. Dunne, still rising through the elite ranks, found herself training alongside her idol.
Now, in 2025, the two gymnastics icons are set to reunite under the bright lights of Churchill Downs-this time not for tumbling, but tradition.
Simone Biles will deliver the iconic “Riders Up” call at the 151st Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 3, while Olivia Dunne will handle the same honors at the Kentucky Oaks the day before. The command signals jockeys to mount their horses, and since 2012, Churchill Downs has invited celebrities to give the call at both events. This year’s choices? A perfect pairing of athletic excellence and star power.
The Kentucky Derby, America’s oldest continuously held sporting event, has been captivating fans since 1875 with its unique blend of high fashion, elite racing, and Southern flair.
With Biles and Dunne now part of its long history, the Derby is set to dazzle with a gymnastics twist. And while Dunne may have missed out on the LSU visit, her upcoming shared spotlight with Biles is a full-circle moment years in the making.
