Facing a rash of injuries to key position players, the Minnesota Twins are expected to call up consensus top-100 prospect Luke Keaschall from Triple-A St. Paul this weekend to provide lineup help, a team source told The Athletic.
Already without third baseman Royce Lewis because of a spring training hamstring injury, the Twins placed outfielder Matt Wallner on the injured list Thursday with a left hamstring strain.

The availability of utility player Willi Castro (oblique) and shortstop Carlos Correa (wrist) is also uncertain heading into a three-game road series against the Atlanta Braves that begins Friday night.
With both Jose Miranda (hand) and Austin Martin (hamstring) on the Triple-A injured list, the Twins are turning to Keaschall, their 2023 second-round draft pick and the organization’s reigning minor-league player of the year, for what will be his big-league debut.

Keaschall batted .303/.420/.483 with 15 homers and 23 steals in 103 games against Double-A and Triple-A pitching last season despite playing through a torn elbow ligament that limited the second baseman/outfielder mostly to first base and designated hitter. He eventually underwent Tommy John surgery in August.
Keaschall had yet to play any outfield for St. Paul this season as he ramps up his post-surgery throwing progression, but he did resume seeing action at second base, along with time at DH, batting .261/.379/.348 with one homer and four steals in 14 games.
The right-handed hitter ranked No. 3 on my preseason list of the Twins’ top 40 prospects and placed No. 62 in The Athletic’s league-wide top 100. Keaschall impressed the coaching staff during spring training with his strong strike-zone control, underrated power potential and above-average speed, profiling as a possible top-of-the-order bat in time.
Along with Keaschall’s anticipated arrival, the Twins also acquired utility player Jonah Bride from the Miami Marlins for cash considerations Thursday, adding him to the active roster as the corresponding move for Wallner going on the IL.

Bride was designated for assignment by Miami after getting off to a 4-for-40 (.100) start this season, but the 29-year-old right-handed hitter was productive for the Marlins last year, batting .276/.357/.461 with 11 homers in 71 games. He’s also a career .297/.432/.509 hitter across parts of three Triple-A seasons while playing every infield spot but shortstop.

Keaschall is a big part of the team’s future, whereas Bride is short-term depth for a banged-up lineup, although it’s possible Bride could hit his way into a longer stay given how desperate the Twins are for any kind of offensive production.
It’s been another slow start for the Twins’ bats, with the lineup collectively hitting just .216 with a .621 OPS that ranks 25th out of 30 teams. Wallner, Harrison Bader and Ty France are the only Twins hitters with an above-average OPS through 19 games, and Wallner is likely to miss at least the rest of April.
Now the Twins are looking for the 22-year-old Keaschall and 24-year-old Brooks Lee to provide a much-needed spark with most of their core hitters either struggling or banged up.
