Authorities have identified 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner as the suspect in Thursday’s shooting at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, which left two people dead and at least six others injured, one in critical condition.
The university issued an alert at 12:01 p.m. ET warning of an “active shooter in the area of the Student Union.” Students and staff were advised to seek shelter immediately and avoid doors and windows. Subsequent alerts urged everyone to remain in place as police responded to the scene.
By 3:18 p.m., FSU announced the threat had been “neutralized,” though several areas, including the Student Union, remained active crime scenes.

Who Is Phoenix Ikner?
According to officials at a press conference, Ikner is the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy, who has served with the department for over 18 years. Sheriff Walter A. McNeil confirmed that the suspect had access to one of his mother’s service weapons, which was found at the crime scene.
“Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons, and that was one of the weapons that was found at the scene,” McNeil stated. Authorities are currently investigating how he obtained the weapon and whether he had access to others.
Phoenix Ikner is currently hospitalized, though no details have been released regarding his injuries or condition.
Community Impact
The shooting caused panic across campus. Students like Kai McGalla, who was in the middle of an exam, described scenes of fear and disbelief. “I’m in shock… The first thing you think is, ‘This can’t be true,'” she told the Associated Press.
McKenzie Heeter, a junior at FSU, told NBC News that she saw the shooter arrive in an orange Hummer, get out with a rifle, and start shooting in her direction. “I think he missed. He then went back to his car, grabbed a pistol, and shot the woman in front of him. That’s when I just started running,” she recalled.
