Jason Knauf, the former royal aide whose 2021 bullying allegations against Meghan Markle rocked the British royal family, has been appointed as the next CEO of Prince William’s high-profile environmental initiative, the Earthshot Prize.
The announcement was made Thursday, following current CEO Hannah Jones’ decision to step down after four years in the role.
Knauf, an American-born communications strategist and longtime trusted member of the royal household, has been a board member of the Earthshot Prize since 2022. He is now set to take full leadership of the organization as it moves into a critical new phase.
Prince William praised Knauf’s appointment in a statement released with the announcement.
“As we look ahead to the future of The Prize and the urgent work needed to scale more inspiring solutions to the world’s greatest challenges, I look forward to working with Jason to chart the course for the next five years of The Earthshot Prize and beyond,” it read.
Meanwhile, Knauf expressed gratitude for the opportunity in a LinkedIn post shortly after the news broke.
“It is an honour to be appointed as CEO of The Earthshot Prize. Thank you to the Board of Trustees for placing their faith in me to lead this very special organization. And thanks to Hannah Jones for her leadership over four remarkable years and for her support during this transition,” he said.
Controversial history resurfaces amid new role
While the move signals continuity and loyalty within Prince William’s inner circle, it has also reignited discussion surrounding Knauf’s role in one of the most controversial royal stories in recent years: his 2018 complaint against Meghan Markle.
As communications secretary to Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle, Knauf allegedly filed a formal HR complaint detailing claims that Meghan “bullied” two personal assistants out of the royal household.
He cited multiple reports from colleagues and warned that the Duchess of Sussex was “bullying Y and seeking to undermine her confidence,” according to The Times of London. “The treatment of X* was totally unacceptable,” Knauf wrote in the October 2018 letter.
These allegations were made public in early 2021, just days before Meghan and Harry’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, igniting a storm of public reaction. Markle has consistently denied the accusations, and no formal public resolution was ever issued by the Palace.
Despite the storm surrounding the Meghan allegations, Knauf’s loyalty to Prince William has remained unwavering. He went on to serve as the CEO of The Royal Foundation for the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from 2019 to 2022, and helped guide the early structure of the Earthshot Prize.
