Finky v zápase s obhájkyněmi titulu překvapily tím, že nechaly odpočívat gólmanskou jedničkou Aholaovou a místo ní se postavila do branky teprve 21letá Kyrkkoová. Její spoluhráčky už po 46 vteřinách senzačně vedly, když se před 5273 diváky v Budvar Areně prosadila kapitánka Karvinenová.
Odpověď Kanaďanek přišla za necelé dvě minuty a postupně se projevovala jejich herní převaha. Nejproduktivnější hráčka šampionátu Poulinová (4+7) pak zajistila favoritkám ještě během úvodní třetiny vedení. Zámořský výběr měl po změně víc ze hry, dlouho se to ale neprojevovalo na skóre.
Teprve když Wattsová využila ve 38. minutě zmatku ve finské obraně a upravila na 3:1, spustila brankostroj obhájkyň zlata. Finská střídačka neuspěla s trenérskou výzvou a soupeřky pak ještě před druhou sirénou během 59 vteřin přidaly další tři góly. Suomi tak postihla podobná kanadská sprcha, jakou poznaly na závěr skupiny české hráčky.
Za jasného stavu 6:1 se poslední třetina měla dohrávat, z poklidného rámce však vybočil pětiminutový trest pro Wattsovou za faul na Karvinenovou. Kanaďanky ale v oslabení přidaly gól a stále neměly dost. Unavený a chybující finský tým inkasoval ještě poosmé.
Pokud se povede zaplnit téměř šestitisícovou kapacitu budějovické haly i při obou nedělních zápasech, tak je letos reálná šance na překonání celkového rekordu návštěvnosti MS platného od roku 2009, kdy v Kanadě šampionát vidělo 119 213 diváků.
