Colin Kaepernick may have not played a down of NFL football in over seven years, but he has not given up on returning to the league. According to his longtime partner, media personality Nessa Diab, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is still putting in the work.
TMZ Sports caught up with Nessa in New York City, where she provided a rare update on Kaepernick‘s status and mindset as he remains one of the most discussed and debated free agents in NFL history.
“All day, every day!” Nessa said emphatically when asked about whether Kaepernick was still training. “Nothing has changed! Nothing!”
Still waiting for that call
Kaepernick, now 37, hasn’t taken an NFL snap since January 1, 2017, but he hasn’t officially retired either. Despite years away from the gridiron, he has continued to maintain his physical fitness and quarterback skills in hopes that a general manager somewhere will give him one more shot.
The last time he worked out for a team was in 2022, when the Las Vegas Raiders brought him in for a session-but ultimately chose not to sign him. Before that, the Seattle Seahawks expressed interest in 2020, and in 2019, Kaepernick held a public workout in Atlanta after disagreements with the NFL over logistics of a scheduled combine-style event. Scouts from seven teams attended that session.
In 2023, the Los Angeles Chargers-then led by former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who coached Kaepernick in San Francisco-reportedly offered him a coaching position. Kaepernick, however, turned it down. The opportunity, while notable, wasn’t what he’s been aiming for. He’s still holding out for a player contract, not a clipboard.
From Super Bowl to sidelined
Before becoming the face of NFL activism through his kneeling protest against racial injustice and police brutality in 2016, Kaepernick had carved out a name for himself as one of the league’s most dynamic young quarterbacks. He led the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, where they narrowly lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
In his six NFL seasons, Kaepernick threw for 12,271 yards, 72 touchdowns, and just 30 interceptions, while adding over 2,300 rushing yards and 13 rushing scores.
Despite his solid stats and dual-threat capability, he became a free agent after the 2016 season-and hasn’t been signed since, prompting heated debate over whether he was blackballed by the league for his protest.
