K situaci došlo v prvním setu utkání s Belgičankou. Světová jednička po jedné z výměn čelila brejkbolu a nesouhlasila s verdiktem rozhodčí, která její úder i po osobním přezkumu označila jako aut. Když odmítla stopu osobně znova zkontrolovat, vzala Sabalenková otěže do svých rukou.
Běloruska si od svého týmu u lavičky vzala telefon a přímo na kurtu si pořídila fotografii místa dopadu míčku. Přítomní diváci daný moment ocenili smíchem a potleskem, rozhodčí na to reagovala varováním za nesportovní chování. Fotografie, na níž Sabalenková pořizuje zařízením snímek stopy, se rychle staly virálními na sociálních sítích.
Po zápase Sabalenková navíc naznačila, že napětí mezi ní a rozhodčí přetrvávalo i po zápase. „Při podání ruky se na mě podívala opravdu zvláštně a stiskla mi ruku silněji než obvykle,“ prohlásila světová jednička s úsměvem. Reportérka se na kurtu následně doptávala, jestli sama světová jednička reagovala obdobně. „Ne, já jí to nevracela. Proč bych se pouštěla do takových her? Beru to v pohodě,“ odvětila trojnásobná vítězka grandslamu.
