The big UFC fight in June is cancelled: Du Plessis is injured… and Chimaev is furious

The UFC is in serious trouble. The UFC 317 on June 28 – International Fight Week – is one of the most important events of the year for the company, and it is currently hanging by a thread. The plan was to have a fight between Dricus Du Plessis (23-2) and Khamzat Chimaev (14-0) as the main event, with the middleweight title on the line. However, an injury to the South African seems to have thwarted their plans, which has provoked the ire of the Chechen, who was already finalizing his camp in Kislovodsk, Russia, where legends such as Fedor Emelianenko have already triumphed.

Diego Lopes Breaks Down Backstage After Heartbreaking UFC 314 Loss to Alexander Volkanovski

“This guy is the biggest piece of s**t,” Chimaev wrote on his X account, which practically confirms Du Plessis’ injury. Even though the fight was not yet official, it was said that Alexandre Pantoja – flyweight champion – and Kai Kara-France would be the co-main event of the second numbered card in June, while Dricus and Khamzat would put the icing on the cake. This setback forces the UFC to work against the clock, as there are only two months left until the date arrives.

The fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall will not happen in the short term, O’Malley and Merab have a fight scheduled for UFC 316, and Islam Makhachev is waiting to see what happens at UFC 315 between Belal Muhammad – welterweight champion – and Jack Della Maddalena. This reduces the chances to a minimum, and there is already talk of the possibility of Alex Pereira coming to the company’s rescue once again to face Magomed Ankalaev in the rematch of last UFC 313 where ‘Poatan’ lost his light heavyweight belt.

Ilia Topuria vs Charles Oliveira?

Although it is a more utopian idea, there is also the possibility that the UFC will move the fight and face Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira, or even use the Islam Makhachev card. The reality is that Topuria is still not in camp, so it would be quite risky to accept a fight with so little preparation time. It is rumored that the lightweight champion could face Justin Gaethje, but UFC 315 will be key to know if the Dagestani will move up in weight or stay at 155 pounds.

Another possibility would be to have an interim belt between Chimaev and another title contender, but Du Plessis already defended the belt in January against Sean Strickland and it would not make much sense. The Chechen will surely not accept any other fight than the title shot, so it is most likely that he will have to wait until the second half of 2025 to try to become the new 185-pound champion

Du Plessis’ injury has been a real blow for Dana White and his team, as the announcement of the UFC 317 card was imminent. Now it’s time to restructure everything and organize a new main fight that lives up to expectations of what should be the big card of the year.

No edge rushers for Lions on NFL Draft Day 2 as Brad Holmes sticks to his plan

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions war room were spotted wearing hoodies that read “HWS” — height, weight, speed — crossed out. The Lions typically coordinate their apparel during draft weekend. They’ve worn “positional villain” hoodies. They’ve collectively worn Dan Campbell jerseys, perhaps an ode to drafting Dan Campbell guys. So when Holmes emerged Friday at the end of night two, he explained the latest draft-related message.Advertisement“Height, weight, speed — it is the opposite of film evaluation, and we’re all about film evaluation,” Holmes said. “That’s the hard part of scouting. Height, weight, speed is easy. Stats are easy. A position listed is easy. But film evaluation is hard to figure out.”The Lions believe in film. They believe it doesn’t lie. The film told them that Georgia guard Tate Ratledge and Arkansas wide reciever Isaac TeSlaa […]

With Game 3 win, Devils show resolve that could benefit them long beyond the playoffs

NEWARK, N.J. — Friday night’s double-overtime victory doesn’t mean the New Jersey Devils will win this series. It doesn’t even mean they’ll reach Game 6. They are still the heavy underdogs and trailing 2-1 against a Carolina Hurricanes team that is healthier and has more recent playoff success. Not many people would bat an eye if Carolina won the next two games and sent the Devils home for the summer.AdvertisementBut that doesn’t change the importance of New Jersey’s Game 3 win. It’s the type of game that will stick with players on the roster, from overtime hero Simon Nemec — a healthy scratch earlier this series — to Jonas Siegenthaler, who played his first game since February, to young players like Paul Cotter and Cody Glass, who took their first-ever playoff overtime shifts. It’s the type of win that builds the […]

Eagles see Andrew Mukuba as a physical, disciplined safety; stockpiled Day 3 picks with trades

PHILADELPHIA — Howie Roseman strode into the auditorium with a grin, with a quip prepared for the bleary-eyed reporters who stuck around the NovaCare Complex into the wee hours of the NFL Draft’s second night only for the Philadelphia Eagles general manager to trade out of the third round.“Rest up for next year, Friday night, because we are working next year on Friday night,” Roseman said.AdvertisementIndeed, Day 2 in 2026 is scheduled to be a marathon. The Eagles have a second round pick and three other selections in the third round. They’ve never had more than three in a given draft since Roseman was first named general manager in 2010. Next year promises to offer more flare than Friday night did. The Eagles spent the No. 64 pick on Texas safety Andrew Mukuba, then used Nos. 96 and 134 within a series […]

Broncos trio of Day 2 moves ‘paid off’ after landing offensive pieces RJ Harvey, Pat Bryant

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — In the thick of the NFL Draft chaos Friday night, as phones buzzed in the Denver Broncos’ war room, general manager George Paton ordered a pause on the movement for a brief, yet urgent news announcement.“I just want to congratulate Sean (Payton),” the GM said, “on his first trade back since 2006.”AdvertisementPaton last year said the Broncos were preparing a cake when the coach almost, but not quite, triggered a move back on Day 2 of the draft. On Friday, he joked that a trophy for Payton, whose draft DNA typically moves him up the board instead of down it, was on the way after the Broncos moved back twice in the second round — from No. 51 to 57; then from 57 to 60.“It certainly paid off,” Payton said. The Broncos viewed those moves as critical framework […]

Why the Seahawks couldn’t resist Jalen Milroe, both the player and person: ‘He’s unique’

RENTON, Wash. — In February, John Schneider said that for the Seattle Seahawks to draft a quarterback this offseason, the board would have to speak to them on draft weekend.Hearing from the longtime general manager and coach Mike Macdonald on Friday night, it sounds like what spoke volumes was Jalen Milroe’s game film — and his personality.Advertisement“He’s a unique, special young man, special athlete,” Schneider said.Seattle selected with Milroe, a two-year starter at Alabama, with the No. 92 pick, which the team received from the Las Vegas Raiders in the Geno Smith trade.
