V letech 2000-2004 oba kanadské týmy sehrály čtyři vyhrocené série a ve všech měli navrch Maple Leafs v sestavě s Matsem Sundinem, Tiem Domim nebo Tomášem Kaberlem. Současné Toronto dominovalo díky spolehlivému gólmanovi Anthonymu Stolarzovi i produktivitě největších hvězd.

A taky se ukázalo, jakou roli v play off hrají zkušenosti. Maple Leafs jsou v posledních sezonách pravidelným účastníkem vyřazovací části, zatímco Senators hrají o Stanley Cup poprvé od roku 2017. „Nervozita se na nás projevila už na začátku,“ tvrdil útočník Drake Batherson.

Ottawa sice v základní části ovládla všechny tři vzájemné zápasy s celkovým skóre 9:3, ale v noci na pondělí jako by nevěděla, co má dělat. Její hráči zbytečně faulovali a v oslabení třikrát inkasovali.

„Je nad slunce jasné, jaké máme problémy. Udělali jsme příliš mnoho faulů, oni z toho dali góly. Takže je to teď na nás,“ řekl kapitán Senators Brady Tkachuk, na kterého se ve Scotiabank Areně posměšně bučelo a skandovalo. „Asi jsem to čekal. Upřímně řečeno, je mi to úplně jedno,“ poznamenal lídr Ottawy.

Klíčovou oporou Senators v sérii má být bývalý gólman Bostonu a držitel Vezina Trophy 2023 Linus Ullmark. V prvním zápase měl ovšem úspěšnost zákroků 75 procent, když pustil dva góly z úvodních tří střel. „Teď se s tím nedá nic dělat… Jediné, co můžeme, je soustředit se na další zápas,“ řekl 31letý Švéd. „Náš brankář je skvělý, nemám o něj obavy,“ smetl otázky ohledně Ullmarkovy formy kouč Travis Green.

Za Toronto řádila velká čtyřka v čele s Mitchem Marnerem (1+2), John Tavares a William Nylander měli po gólu a asistenci, Auston Matthews přidal dvě přihrávky. „Tihle kluci takové zápasy dobře znají a zvládli to bez potíží,“ pochvaloval si kouč Craig Berube, který v závěru z lavičky pozoroval rozjívené skupinky rváčů.

Deset aktérů inkasovalo tresty za hrubost a Senators věří, že úvodní kolaps ještě neznamená prohranou sérii. Zkusí to dokázat ve druhém torontském souboji v noci na středu.
